Absolutely Devastating: Fans Left Mourning After Wisconsin Standout Passes Away at 25
The college football world is mourning a loss of one of its own. On April 1, former Wisconsin tight end Jack Pugh passed away. He was only 25 years old. Even though Pugh was away from the gridiron for some time, fans poured in their tribute.
“The Wisconsin Athletics family is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Pugh. Jack was a positive light and brought a genuine spirit to our football program. More than that, he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff,” the Wisconsin Football page on X shared a statement.
Graduated in 2025 from Wisconsin, and three years into the program, he developed a strong bond with his mates. The former four-star prospect stepped away from playing football in December 2023. His decision was followed by an emotional statement on Instagram, where he cited the reason behind his retirement.
“My physical health was not near perfect, but my mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up. Over years of prolonged depression and substance abuse, I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness," read the statement.
However, in this difficult process, he found the Wisconsin program by his side. Pugh ended the note showing gratitude to the Badgers' program.
"I want to thank the amazing Coaches, Teammates, Friends and Family @badgerfootball has provided me with over the years for helping me find a life I’m happy and proud of, and to finally create a relationship with God. I’ll never forget the memories. Love y’all,” he wrote.
The cause of Pugh's death is yet to be announced.
Fans mourn the demise of Jack Pugh
Pugh has been part of the Wisconsin program since 2020. Shocked by the news, a fan wrote, “The News about Jack Pugh is absolutely devastating. The Wisconsin football program confirmed it late last night, and it’s just a heavy loss for the entire community.” This loss feels personal to fans having known him for six years.
The junior out of Hilliard Bradley High School was relatively new to football, yet had a four-star rating. “Heartbreaking news about Jack Pugh at just 25. He battled hard with mental health and stepped away from the game. Depression is a silent fight. Sending love, strength, and prayers to his family. RIP Jack," a fan commented how the talented player is gone too soon.
Pugh, who once had offers from powerhouse programs like Michigan and Penn State, fought a tough battle personally. A fan was also honest about depression and what it can do to oneself, “This is so incredibly sad. Depression is such a B****. It lies to you. It tells you, Bu******, that isn’t true. It makes you believe that you aren’t loved when the opposite is true. Rest in peace, warrior, we know you tried.”
Another fan was keeping Pugh’s family and loved ones in their mind, “So sad to hear. Sending strength to his family and all who cared for him.” The impact of Jack Pugh will live on, cherished by his family and etched into Wisconsin’s legacy.
