ACC WR Ousted From Football Program After Arrest

Cameron Sparks, a redshirt freshman wide receiver at Virginia Tech, is no longer with the Hokies football program. The school confirmed his departure to Tech Sideline reporter Andy Bitter on Saturday.

"Cam Sparks is no longer with the football program," a Virginia Tech spokesperson told Bitter. "Our priority is to be direct and transparent with impacted student-athletes as early as possible so they have the best opportunity to evaluate their next steps academically and athletically. We appreciate Cam's time at Virginia Tech and will support him through that transition."

Bitter pointed out that if you look at the Virginia court database, there's a misdemeanor DWI charge from April 12 for a Cameron Lamar Sparks.

"His lawyer is listed as Jimmy Turk, who frequently defends VT athletes. Sparks is due in court again on June 18," Bitter reported.

The school brought up roster attrition tied to the coaching change and the House settlement limits in the same statement, but stopped short of naming his recent legal trouble as the specific reason for his dismissal.

Sparks came in as a late signee from Baylor School in Chattanooga during the 2025 cycle, rated three stars and sitting at No. 107 among wideouts nationally per the Rivals Industry Ranking.

At 6-foot-2 and 211 pounds, he barely saw the field last season and took a redshirt, though he did catch a 2-yard score in the spring game on April 18.

Virginia Tech is now moving forward without him, and the timing is not great.

What Sparks' Departure Means for Virginia Tech Under James Franklin

James Franklin left Penn State after last season and came to Virginia Tech, walking into a program that had gone 3-9 in 2025 with a 2-6 mark in ACC play. Reshaping that roster has been the job since day one in Blacksburg.

The statement Virginia Tech put out leaned on the coaching transition and House settlement roster limits as background context, but Franklin has not said anything publicly about Sparks specifically.

With the spring game behind them and the 2026 season approaching, Virginia Tech is still building the depth chart at wide receiver. Losing a young pass catcher, regardless of the circumstances, is not ideal timing for a coaching staff looking to establish itself quickly in the ACC.
