Analyst: J.J. McCarthy looks like “better option” in Vikings QB1 battle
The Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray this offseason with one thing in mind. He was supposed to walk in and compete with the franchise QB J.J. McCarthy.
Since Murray joined the mix, reports have surfaced suggesting the team may choose him over McCarthy, potentially leading to the former Michigan Wolverines quarterback being traded. However, NFL analyst Mike Florio has a different take on the whole situation.
"Maybe McCarthy looks like the better option as week one approaches," Florio said on Pro Football Talk. "But if you're doing a projection as to where Kyler Murray's going to be come week 18, he may be the better option."

The core of this analysis highlights a crucial sequencing decision: if Murray starts the season and falters, McCarthy can step in cleanly without a massive career-defining stigma.
However, Florio warns that starting McCarthy only to bench him for the veteran mid-year could permanently break his relationship with the franchise. But it doesn't end there.
"I think Murray went to Minnesota to start, and if he doesn't get that job, there's going to be a problem," Florio said on the show. "It'll get ugly if Kyler doesn't get the job because the argument will be, 'I really didn't have a fair shake, I don't know this offense.'"
Murray joined the Vikings on a one-year $1.3 million deal after the Arizona Cardinals released him following a foot injury that ended his 2025 season after just five games. The expectation was that he would immediately be named QB1 over J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota has not made that call.
Murray has already acknowledged that splitting reps makes it hard to compete fairly. Florio said that sets up a built-in excuse if things go sideways.
McCarthy's 2025 numbers were not pretty. He completed 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 10 starts.
But if that decision is made this season, what impact will it have on head coach Kevin O'Connell's future with the team?
What this decision means for Kevin O’Connell’s future in Minnesota
Kevin O'Connell has built a reputation as one of the better offensive minds in the league. But winning in the regular season and not converting in January is a pattern that eventually catches up to coaches.
If the Vikings mishandle this QB situation and miss the playoffs again, questions about O'Connell's future will follow immediately. However, Chris Schad of the Vikings Age believes O'Connell will not get much of the heat.
"With that, it appears that O’Connell’s job isn’t in jeopardy. O’Connell has a 43-25 record and won an NFC North title since being hired by the Vikings in 2022, but he’s the only head coach in the division without a playoff win," Schad wrote in early June.
Florio's warning was not just about Murray and McCarthy. It was about the entire franchise getting this right when it matters most. Do you think the Vikings should name Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy as their Week 1 starter? Let us know in the comments.
