Since Kyler Murray's arrival in March, Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition has been one of the biggest storylines heading into training camp. While the team continues to describe it as an open battle, one ESPN analyst believes there is already a clear frontrunner.

With camp set to begin on August 1, ESPN's Kevin Seifert sees veteran Kyler Murray entering the competition with the upper hand over J.J. McCarthy. Previewing Minnesota's training camp, Seifert made his outlook on the quarterback battle clear.

"Murray is the heavy favorite to win the job, but it's impossible to pull eyes away from any unsettled quarterback situation,” Seifert wrote. 

As per Seifert's ESPN report on July 22, Murray's seven years of experience with the Arizona Cardinals, with a 17-game average of nearly 4,000 passing yards a season, and skill set are reasons why he believes the veteran is in the best position to be the Vikings QB1.

Seifert also praised Murray's arm talent but said learning Kevin O'Connell's offense will take time. 

"In his previous seven NFL seasons, Murray has displayed the arm talent necessary to succeed in O'Connell's offense,” Seifert added.

Even in his 2025 season, this arm talent saw Murray complete 68.3% of his passes in five games.

Seifert noted that Murray is still learning Minnesota's offense. During organized team activities, Murray said splitting first-team reps with McCarthy has slowed that process.

McCarthy also has plenty at stake this summer. After missing his rookie season with a knee injury, he'll try to earn the starting job and reestablish himself in Minnesota's plans.

Unfortunately, after missing out on his rookie season through injury, his 2025 didn't look ideal either. Injuries kept him to just 10 games last year, with a concerning 57.6% completion rate and a 35.6 QBR.

McCarthy's situation has also drawn attention from other analysts.

Earlier this week, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox suggested McCarthy could eventually benefit from a fresh start if he fails to win the job in Minnesota.

"To be fair, there's still a chance that McCarthy can claim the Vikings' starting gig in camp,” Knox wrote. “If he can't, however, Murray may never relinquish it."

Knox argued that losing the competition could leave McCarthy without a clear long-term future in Minnesota.

Despite growing expectations that Murray will open the season as Minnesota's starter, not everyone believes the competition is over.

Adam Schefter offers different outlook

ESPN insider Adam Schefter recently urged caution when discussing the quarterback battle, saying McCarthy still has an opportunity to change the outcome once training camp begins.

“I know everybody is anointing Kyler. I'm not ready to just give up on J.J. McCarthy,” Schefter said on Get Up on July 21. “That's me. We'll see.”

While Seifert views Murray as the favorite entering camp, he also pointed out that the competition remains one of the biggest storylines to watch at TCO Performance Center.

Training camp opens August 1, and the coming weeks should provide the clearest indication of where the Vikings stand.

Murray's experience and early momentum have made him the frontrunner, but McCarthy still has a chance to change the narrative if he performs well in camp and the preseason.
