Big Ten Coach Believes Michigan Can Win Conference Title in 2026

The Michigan Wolverines are excelling in their recruiting drive so far. The program, under new head coach Kyle Whittingham, has been declared a Big Ten Conference title contender by another coach.

“I think they can win the conference,” an anonymous Big Ten coach said. “It’s not a group with a lot of household names, but there’s a lot of depth with really good players.”

On May 18, Athlon Sports reported this mystery coach’s opinion on rival programs and how the Wolverines changed, as did their head coach.

“I love that roster. The second that Sherrone Moore was gone, they actually got to run that roster,” he said on the program’s former head coach. “There are four or five players in that freshman class who’ll contribute immediately, and they had a bunch of freshmen last year who contributed.”

In 2025, with Moore, the Wolverines ended with a 9-3 record in the regular season, but gave unsatisfactory performances. Take quarterback Bryce Underwood, for example.

CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli noted that if he had completed 5.5% more of his targeted passes, he would have clinched 65.8% throws for an adjusted 2,549 yards.

Underwood passed for 2,428 yards and is expected to pull through this season with two other names.

“On offense, you’re gonna have Bryce, Andrew Marsh and Jaime Ffrench and JJ Buchanan out of the portal,” the coach stated. “There’s a lot of excitement for what that team can be this year.”

After a wipeout 27-9 loss to arch-rivals, the Buckeyes, all eyes would be on the Wolverines, waiting to see if and how they bounce back.

While the anonymous coach’s insight shares how others view their players, a Michigan staffer shared who has caught his eye so far.

Michigan Wolverines Cornerback Coach Reveals Four Standout Players

On May 20, Jernaro Gilford, the Wolverines’ new cornerback coach, named four players from this season’s roster to watch out for.

“Yeah, the two returners, first off, Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry,” Gilford said in an episode of In the Trenches podcast. “They both showed that they're efficient in man and zone, and they have a high IQ for the game.”

Jyaire Hill bypassed the NFL Draft and the transfer portal to remain at Ann Arbor. Meanwhile, Zeke Berry is returning for his fifth season with them. Among these experienced players are two newbies who have already turned heads.

“Shamari Earls (defensive back), a big, long guy who can run…by the end of spring ball, he came around,” Gilford told Jon Janson. “Smith Snowden (cornerback) came over from Utah…when he stepped on the field, you can tell like, ‘OK, he’s going to be a player.’”

With Gilford’s admission, questions arise about whether these are the players the anonymous player was talking about. Whatever might be the case, this is going to be an interesting season for more reasons than one.
