Bill Belichick reveals why coaching Tom Brady was difficult for him
Bill Belichick spent two decades coaching Tom Brady in New England, but the legendary coach says working with the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback was never as simple as many fans might think.
Speaking on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Belichick said Brady's greatest strength also made him one of the most demanding players to coach. The seven-time Super Bowl champion constantly searched for new ways to improve, ensuring every meeting became another opportunity to refine his game.
"Tom always wanted to be better every single day, every week," Belichick said. "There was a new challenge, a new defense, a new coverage. It was continual improvement."
That constant pursuit of improvement is what made coaching Brady so demanding. No matter how much success he had already achieved, the quarterback treated every week like a fresh challenge, pushing Belichick to keep finding answers alongside him.

On the Herd and Colin Cowherd podcast (YouTube @TheHerdwithColinCowherd), Belichick was asked about the difficulty level of coaching "greater players," and the coach answered honestly.
"No. In all of those cases, Colin, they all wanted to keep getting better," Belichick said. "Tom Brady, every day and every time we met and talked, we would learn from each other."
Belichick said the same mindset extended to Gronkowski and Taylor, whose games continued to evolve even after they had established themselves among the NFL's elite.
He believes that willingness to adapt was the biggest reason all three enjoyed such sustained success.
Brady developed into one of the league's best quarterbacks by his fourth season. But Gronkowski adjusted his game after injuries, and Taylor expanded his role beyond being an elite pass rusher.
According to Belichick, their commitment to improving made them exceptional players to coach.
Before moving on, Belichick even shared a lighthearted story about Taylor.
He recalled the Hall of Fame linebacker once outrunning everyone on a 99-yard interception return because he thought his own shadow was an opponent chasing him.
Brady previously explained Belichick's demanding coaching style
Belichick's comments echo what Brady has said about their relationship over the years.
Appearing on the Stick to Football podcast (YouTube @TheOverlap), Brady explained that Belichick created an environment where every player was held accountable, regardless of reputation.
"When Bill Belichick walked in the room, everyone sat up because they didn't want to be called out," Brady said. "They didn't do their job well, and there was going to be a coach that said, 'I told you what to do.'"
Brady said those film sessions could be tough. Belichick pointed out mistakes in front of the whole team, and even veteran stars were held to the same standard.
He said Belichick made practices and meetings tougher than games. That way, players felt ready when Sunday arrived.
"Every day was hard, so that Sunday everyone won, and we were all happy that we won on Sunday," Brady added.
Looking back, Belichick's comments suggest Brady's relentless drive for improvement wasn't a burden because of personality, but because excellence never stood still. That shared mindset ultimately helped the pair build one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history, winning six Super Bowls together in New England.
