Bill Belichick’s Former QB Reveals Players Were ‘Ridiculed’ for Failing His Expectations

Quarterback Gio Lopez has left the Tar Heels, but his memories of the place aren't great. The reason was the North Carolina head coach, Bill Belichick. According to Lopez, the atmosphere under Belichick was far from encouraging.

This was recently confirmed by Nick Kosko of On3, as per whom, Gio's father, Barney Lopez, shared his son's ordeal under Belichick.

Barney said, "You were ridiculed if you didn’t do it exactly the way he was told. You could be at the dang line, see the play is about to be blown up, but if you try to call it off or audible, you were ridiculed."

Lopez succumbed and went 4-of-10 for 69 yards and an interception in the season opener. Last fall, Gio finished with just 1,747 yards, 10 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 65.1% completion percentage. He managed a 4-7 record at the Tar Heels.

However, now that Gio has transferred to Wake Forest, he sees the difference.

According to Logan Lazarczyk of Sports Illustrated, Gio Lopez said, "Back at the other school, it felt like there’s no air. Here, it’s fun again. They’re moving us in the right direction, energized, and guys are enjoying football. It’s like fresh air. I’d never had to respond to tough situations like that on that loud of a scale."

Bill Belichick was hired as the coach of UNC in 2024; Gio joined the following year. The QB transferred from South Alabama in 2025 and played 11 games under Belichick and then transferred to Wake Forest after one season. So far, there has been no comment by Belichick after Lopez's statements.

From Bill Belichick’s Starting QB to a Wake Forest Reset

Gio Lopez joined Bill Belichick's program after a staggering career at South Alabama. Accumulating 2,559 passing yards, 463 rushing yards, and 25 TDs in 2024. Impressed with his playing style, Belichick recruited him to be the starting QB in his debut season at UNC.

Growing locker room issues soon caused his performance to suffer. Lopez's move to Wake Forest could not have been Belichick's fault alone, but he certainly played a role.

“Gio has always loved the game of football, and he was losing the love for it when he was over there [at North Carolina],” Barney Lopez said, as per Sports Illustrated.

He added, "Being at Wake Forest and with Coach Ezell (offensive coordinator), the type of coaches he's used to who have the excitement he likes, it's been game-changing for him."

In three years of his college career, he has played in 27 games and started 23 with a record of 10-13. He has a pass completion rate of 65.8% for 4,781 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Now Lopez has his chance to take the helm of the Wake Forest football team under head coach Jake Dickert’s guidance.
