Bitter Over Playoff Snub, Steve Sarkisian Calls Out the Selection Committee

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has had enough. The man who has taken the Longhorns to two playoffs in the last three seasons said what he has been holding back for years.

Sarkisian discussed concerns around the College Football Playoff selection process during a conversation with USA TODAY Sports on May 12, focusing on how the current system evaluates teams.

"Everyone talks about NIL. But my biggest gripe is the selection committee," Sarkisian said. "There's no transparency on what exactly the committee is doing. We have to figure that out."

The College Football Playoff selection committee consists of 13 experts who rank the top 25 teams each week. They assess the strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and game footage to pick 12 playoff teams.

“The committee doesn’t have the bandwidth to watch that many games,” Sarkisian said. “They see the media and coaches polls, and they copy them."

CFP executive director Rich Clark pushed back.

“I can assure you, they watch the games,” Clark said.

Clark insisted that all committee members have iPad access to every game played every weekend. Six of those 13 members are full-time FBS athletic directors.

The 24-Team Playoff Makes It Worse, Not Better

Sarkisian's concern goes beyond the 2025 snub. With college football pushing toward a 24-team playoff, he says the problem only deepens.

"You've got a 12-team playoff, and that means there are at least 30 teams that impact it," he said. "Now all of a sudden, you want to go to 24? Now the polls become an even greater factor, because now you're asking the committee to watch 40 teams a week, if not 50."

His proposed fix will not be popular in television boardrooms.

"I'd go back to a four-team playoff, and have your own conference playoff to get the four teams if you want more inventory for your television partners," Sarkisian said.

The CFP stays at 12 teams for 2026. But with the AFCA, Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and ACC commissioner Jim Phillips all pushing toward 24, Sarkisian may be the loudest voice pushing back.
