Brendan Sorsby Could Fix 4 NFL Franchises' Future As Supplemental Draft Draws Closer
Brendan Sorsby's college career is on thin ice. The NCAA denied Texas Tech's appeal to reinstate his eligibility on Friday, and the supplemental draft clock is now ticking.
Adam Schefter broke the news on X. Texas Tech had appealed to get Sorsby back on the field for 2026. The NCAA said no for the second time. NFL insider Albert Breer jumped in right after the news dropped. He pointed out exactly which teams should be paying attention.
"Benefit for a team like the Cardinals, Jets, Dolphins or Browns on taking a second-round swing on Brendan Sorsby," Breer said, "If you hit, then that frees you up to take someone like Jeremiah Smith or Dylan Stewart next April."
Sorsby makes sense for the Arizona Cardinals as a high-upside successor to the former QB Kyler Murray. The New York Jets need a talented young QB to develop behind their current group. The Miami Dolphins could keep him as a potential long-term replacement for Tua. For the Cleveland Browns, he’d add another high-ceiling arm to compete with or succeed Watson and Sanders.
Sorsby was ruled permanently ineligible after placing at least 2,900 b*** totaling more than $30,000, including roughly 40 wagers on Indiana games while he was their starting quarterback.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has stood by Sorsby throughout the entire process.
"I'm so proud of Brendan for getting help," McGuire said. "We'll continue to support Brendan."
His legal team is still fighting. A civil case is pending after a two-hour hearing in Lubbock on June 1, with judge Ken Curry yet to rule on the injunction request. Sorsby's deadline to enter the supplemental draft is June 22.
How Scouts Are Already Grading Sorsby as an NFL Prospect
The talent evaluation has been building quietly. Tony Pauline, citing multiple sources inside the NFL, reported Sorsby is projected as a late first or early second-round pick in the supplemental draft.
That is not a consolation grade. Several area scouts around the league have him rated higher than Texas QB Arch Manning. That number will get people's attention fast.
Sorsby threw 27 touchdown passes at Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech. The arm talent has never been the question. The off-field situation is the only reason this is a supplemental draft conversation instead of a top-ten pick conversation.
Do you think one of these four teams should take on Brendan Sorsby in the supplemental draft? Let us know in the comments.
