Bryce Underwood Put on Alert After QB Coach Koy Detmer's Remarks

Once the No.1 prospect in the country and the former five-star recruit, Bryce Underwood will be on edge after what his quarterback coach had to say about fellow QB Tommy Carr.

Since Kyle Whittingham took over the reins at Ann Arbor, Koy Detmer followed suit and is now the QB coach of the Wolverines. Talking to the Detroit News, Detmer had a lot to say about Carr.

“Tommy, he's sneaky, man. He’s another talented athlete. Comes from obviously a football background, and so I think just growing up with him and his brother (CJ, Notre Dame’s starting quarterback) in the background, like they've probably just grown up kind of running around playing ball.”

Detmer further showered praise on the QB, saying:

"He has that natural athleticism in him, and he was a lot of fun to work with this spring as well.”

Tommy Carr is a legacy recruit for the Michigan Wolverines and a four-star prospect initially committed to the Miami Ohio RedHawks. He then flipped the script by committing to the school that his family has a rich history with.

Bryce Underwood will be the first-string signal caller, as confirmed by head coach Kyle Whittingham, but he will be wary of Tommy Carr, who is lurking in the background. The spring game did not help Underwood’s case, as the Michigan QB had a strong showing.

Tommy Carr went 21-of-30 for 143 passing yards and also carried the football for 67 rushing yards, while Bryce Underwood played only one quarter and did not have a good time out there on the football field. Underwood finished 3-of-9 with only 22 passing yards and looked off on some of his throws as well.

However, being the starter, the QB coach has a ton of expectations for Underwood.

Detmer Shares His Plans For Underwood

Bryce Underwood is known for his dual-threat ability, and the QB coach plans to use that skill set.

“Totally. We want to utilize our quarterback skill set and put him in positions to be the most successful he can be, and with Bryce, there is an element of running that he does really well,” Detmer said.

In the 2025 season, the true freshman signal-caller carried the football 88 times for 392 rushing yards and also added six rushing touchdowns.

“And so for us, it's just managing, OK, how much we can and the right situations to do that, because naturally, being a kind of a dual-threat kind of guy that he is with it with his legs, you're going to have three to four scrambles that are going to turn into runs in the game. So now just finding a way to necessarily limit but manage his runs when they're not off-scramble that way.”

With all the hype, all eyes would now be on fall camp between the two quarterbacks and to the season opener in the fall later this year.

Do you think Carr has the potential to take over?
