"Coach Moore did his thing": Ex-Wolverine talks about Sherrone Moore replacing Jim Harbaugh

Colston Loveland was right in the middle of Michigan's national title run when everything changed. Head coach Jim Harbaugh got suspended mid-season, and Sherrone Moore stepped in with the stakes as high as they get.

Loveland, who played for the Wolverines at the college level, now plays tight end for the Chicago Bears. He sat down with the Bussin' With the Boys podcast to discuss what that intense stretch felt like from inside the locker room.

"That year it just felt different," Loveland said on the Bussin' With the Boys podcast. "I was like, alright, we got to win this thing. And then Coach Moore stepped in and did his thing at the end there."

The culture Harbaugh had built held steady, and Moore stepped into the biggest moment of his coaching career and delivered. Michigan beat Washington in the national title game and finished 15-0.

Loveland also opened up about Harbaugh's recruiting style, sharing a story that showed what kind of person Harbaugh was off the field.

"He came out to Idaho and stayed the night at my grandparents' house," Loveland said on the Bussin' With the Boys podcast. "I think he slept on the couch...He's like, 'What time are we working out tomorrow?' - So we went and worked out. He's in his khakis, he's got the Jordans on, and we're in there doing squats, cleaning."

Harbaugh driving to Idaho, sleeping on a recruit's grandparents' couch, and waking up to do squats at six in the morning says everything about why Michigan players ran through walls for him.

"That whole deal I was like, oh yeah this is a guy I want to play for, for sure," Loveland said in the same appearance.

Loveland was the tenth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, selected by the Chicago Bears. In his rookie season, he caught 58 passes for 713 yards and six touchdowns.

He went 3-0 against Ohio State at Michigan, one of the best win streaks any Michigan player has put together against the Buckeyes in recent memory.

Sherrone Moore’s tenure ended badly despite the championship legacy he helped build

Moore was fired on December 10, 2025. Michigan's investigation found he had an inappropriate relationship with a female staff member and lied to investigators when they asked him about it, per the Detroit News.

That same night he was let go, police got called to the staff member's home. Moore was arrested before the night was over. The victim, Paige Shiver, later said she had endured years of manipulation and that the university failed to protect her.

The internal investigation into the athletic department that followed has now cost Michigan over $12 million in legal fees and has put athletic director Warde Manuel's job in jeopardy. The Board of Regents is set to meet Thursday to receive the investigation's findings.

What Moore helped build in Ann Arbor will always be part of Michigan football's history. What happened after is a different story entirely.
