College football analyst questions Kyle Whittingham’s ability to win at Michigan
Kyle Whittingham has never coached outside of the Utah Utes for the past two decades. And for some people in college football media, that's the whole conversation.
The ROC Boys Football podcast analyst, Jason Piacelli, broke down the national media takes on Michigan heading into 2026 and kept circling back to one specific concern.
"We haven't seen Kyle Whittingham do it outside of Utah," Jason said on ROC Boys Football podcast on July 5. "I at least understand where Paul Finebaum is coming from."

On June 26, Finebaum went on The Paul Finebaum Show and said flat out that he does not take Michigan seriously in football right now.
"Once Harbaugh left, it felt like that program just flatlined. They're just not that relevant," Finebaum said.
That is the situation Whittingham is stepping into. Two years of instability. A 9-4 record last season. A fanbase that went from celebrating a national title to just waiting to see what happens next.
Jason brought up Luke Fickell at Wisconsin as the comparison to watch. Fickell came from Cincinnati with a clear vision, walked into a roster Paul Chryst had built completely differently, and the mismatch slowed him down early on.
The counterpoint is that Michigan's roster actually fits what Whittingham wants to do. That makes his situation different from Fickell's from the start.
"Michigan built its roster prioritizing the lines of scrimmage, very similar to how Kyle Whittingham did it at Utah," Jason said in the same podcast. That compatibility is the reason the analyst isn't fully buying Finebaum's take.
The defensive line is where it all comes down to.
"If you told me right now that Michigan has a top 10 defensive line in the country, I'm pretty dang close to picking this team to make the College Football Playoff," Jason added.
Whittingham has already said publicly that the defensive line is the best position group on the team, yet the pressure brews in Ann Arbor.
Kyle Whittingham has set the bar high for himself
Whittingham walked into his first Michigan press conference and didn't dodge the expectations question.
"I expect to challenge for the Big Ten title every single year. That should be a given," he said. "At Michigan, if you're not thinking about the Big Ten championship every year, then something is wrong," per Maize N Brew.
That's a bold bar to set in year one. Michigan opens at home against Western Michigan on September 5, then Oklahoma comes to Ann Arbor in Week 2. The answers come fast.
Saturday Tradition ranked Michigan one of the five Big Ten programs entering 2026 with the most pressure. The reasoning was direct.
Michigan fans watched the Ohio State Buckeyes and then the Indiana Hoosiers win national titles after the Wolverines' 2023 championship.
The analyst questioned whether Whittingham can do it outside Utah. The schedule will answer that pretty quickly.
