College football coach suddenly passes away at 34
Shock and heartbreak swept through the Monmouth football community on Tuesday as the university announced the unexpected passing of defensive coordinator Louis DiRienzo Jr. at just 34.
The Monmouth Hawks' official website released an online obituary to mourn the loss of their 34-year-old coach.
“On behalf of Monmouth Athletics, we are heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Coach DiRienzo," Director of Athletics Jennifer Sansevero said.
Louis DiRienzo Jr. joined Monmouth University as their linebackers coach in 2025. He was promoted to the position of defensive coordinator in January this year.
“Lou was an outstanding coach, mentor, and colleague whose passion for developing young men and love for the game made an immediate impact on our football program," Sansevero stated, per Monmouth Obituary. "More importantly, he was a kind, genuine person who built meaningful relationships with everyone around him.”
DiRienzo Jr. played under the guidance of his legendary father, Lou DiRienzo Sr at New Rochelle High School. He was one of the best the school ever produced, earning state, county, and league honors.
He later continued his football career playing as a linebacker for Southern Connecticut State, where he served as team captain.
After completing his bachelor's in exercise science from Southern Connecticut and his master's in physical education from Springfield College, Louis chose coaching as his career.
“Lou was a great person, father and coach," said Hawks head coach Jeff Gallo, per Monmouth. "He poured into our players and program, making a tremendous impact during his time here. We are heartbroken for his wife, Allie, daughters Giavanna and Audrina, and his entire family.”
In just one season with the Hawks, DiRienzo was able to transform Monmouth’s defense into the CAA’s biggest success story.
Under his guidance, the team forced 17 turnovers, recorded 31 sacks, which was the fourth highest last season, and lowered the team's average points surrendered by 5.7 points per game.
Before his time in West Long Branch, DiRienzo spent five seasons at Springfield College, who also shared a heartfelt message for his family.

Before joining Monmouth, Louis DiRienzo Jr. spent five seasons with Springfield College, and he was their defensive coordinator for four straight years.
His methods helped the Springfield Pride clinch four straight NEWMAC titles, and earned him the 2023 Gridiron Club of New England Co-Assistant Coach of the Year honors.
He also helped Louisville Kings linebacker Cam Gill develop his defensive abilities while coaching special teams at Rutgers and Wagner.
"During his time on Alden Street, Lou represented the very best of Springfield College," said Director of Athletics Dr. Craig Poisson per the College Obituary. "While his accomplishments on the football field were impressive, it was the relationships he built with our students and student-athletes that truly defined him.”
Known for his infectious smile and warm rapport with students, Louis was one of the best coaches these colleges could have ever had.
Survived by his wife, Allie, and twin daughters, Audrina and Giavanna, along with his parents, his brother, and his beloved dog, Geno, DiRienzo leaves behind a loving family.
Springfield College extended its heartfelt condolences to them. Wake and funeral services will be held on Thursday and Friday, respectively, in Eastchester, New York.
