College Football Player Passes Away Before Playing First Collegiate Snap
Gavin Yates-Lyons never got to play a single game for Ball State. He was 18 years old, a freshman defensive back who had spent the spring working toward something, but never got the chance to see it through.
Yates-Lyons passed away on Saturday, May 30, a week after being caught in the crossfire of a shooting at a parking garage outside Legacy Suites Apartments in Tallahassee, Florida.
The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 24, at what authorities described as an unsanctioned pop-up party. He was among the three victims. The other two sustained non-life-threatening injuries and survived. Yates-Lyons was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he held on for a week but did not make it.
The Tallahassee Police Department confirmed the investigation remains open and active, with the suspect or suspects still at large.
He had returned home to South Georgia after spring practice with the Cardinals to walk at his high school graduation ceremony. The shooting happened the very next day.

Ball State football chief of staff Pete Roley confirmed his passing in a statement posted to X on Sunday morning.
"Gavin was an extraordinary person, and it is difficult to express the grief we all feel," Roley wrote. "Our hearts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Thank you to the Ball State admin, staff, and community for the support of our players and staff as we mourn."
Moreover, his former high school made sure the world knew what kind of person he was. The Lowndes County High School football page posted the news with four words that said everything: "Forever Young. Forever a Viking."
A Look Back into Yates-Lyons Career
Gavin Yates-Lyons was a promising defensive back who began his college football journey with the Ball State Cardinals in 2026.
A native of Greenville, Florida, he played his high school football at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia. As a senior in 2025, the 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback/safety helped lead the Vikings to a strong 10-2 record. He recorded 15 tackles (7 solo), 2 interceptions, and 3 passes defended.
Yates-Lyons also contributed on special teams. He returned 10 kickoffs for 243 yards, with a long of 40 yards, and his performance earned him honorable mention All-Region honors.
The 18-year-old had committed to Ball State in June 2025 and signed during the Early Signing Period in December 2025. Yates-Lyons enrolled early in January 2026 and participated in spring football practices as a freshman, wearing jersey number 22.
Though his college career was limited to spring practices, Yates-Lyons showed athleticism and versatility in the secondary, flashing potential as both a cover corner and safety. His football journey, even though short, was marked by steady development from high school standout to NCAA Division I athlete.
His talent and character will be remembered.
