Controversial head coach regrets ditching his team for a $91 million contract

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin is known for making controversial decisions throughout his coaching career. Recently, he freely admitted that what happened at Ole Miss last season was one of them.

Speaking to ESPN's Mark Schlabach at SEC Media Days in Tampa on Thursday, Kiffin said he regretted how he handled his exit from Ole Miss before the Rebels' College Football Playoff run last season.

"Yeah, I do [regret it], but I think that's a good thing that I look at life that way now, instead of saying, 'No, I don't. I was right.' I look at things always now, like, how could I have done them better? But it's also easier when you're further removed. There's no emotion involved," Kiffin told ESPN.

That is about as straight as he gets. No excuses. Just time and distance giving him a clearer view of something that was genuinely messy when it was happening.

"I wish I would have gone in when I met with Keith and said, 'I've made the decision to go,'" Kiffin told ESPN. "I wish I would have just said, 'Hey, I'd like to coach the team,' and he'd say, 'No.' And I'd say, 'Hey, OK, I appreciate it.' Move on, never even discussed it again."

Kiffin went 11-1 in the regular season at Ole Miss in 2025, then told AD Keith Carter he was taking the LSU job. Seven years. $91 million.

But after telling Carter he was leaving, Kiffin then spent two days fighting to stay and coach Ole Miss through the College Football Playoff. Carter said no. Kiffin left. Assistant Pete Golding finished the season.

The LSU head coach used a marriage analogy from motivational speaker Kevin Elko to explain why fighting to stay was always going to be impossible.

"He [Elko] said that's really like you're in a marriage. You're leaving the marriage that she thought was great. It was great for six years, and you're leaving it in order to go to another woman who she despises. Oh, but let me stay in the house for a couple more weeks," Kiffin said, per ESPN.

Once he revealed his decision, the relationship was done. Asking to stay and coach through the Playoff was always going to create exactly the mess that followed. There was no clean way out of it.

Ole Miss made it to the CFP semifinals without him. Kiffin finished his time there at 55-19 across six seasons.

LSU will visit Ole Miss on September 19 in a game that will define the early season

The first time Kiffin returns to Oxford will be September 19 when LSU travels to Ole Miss. The game is now the most personal rivalry matchup on the SEC schedule this season.

LSU has quarterback Sam Leavitt coming in as the No. 1-ranked transfer after Arizona State. How Leavitt and the Tigers perform against a vengeful Ole Miss crowd at home will tell a lot about what kind of season Kiffin is in for.

Per Louisiana First News, LSU committed $145 million to secure Kiffin and gave him a $25 million roster budget. A loss to his former team on September 19 would make this massive investment look like an immediate failure.
