Elite running back predicted to dominate freshman All-American race

Think Michigan's offense is already firing on all cylinders? Think again. The arrival of Savion Hiter has raised the ceiling even higher, and while he's set to make an immediate impact this season, one NFL analyst believes he'll shock everyone.

Ranked No. 1 running back in the Class of 2026 and the No. 12 overall prospect by the Rivals, Hiter has already made a name for himself. That's why SI's Michigan insider, Lucas Reimink, believes he's poised to dominate this season.

“After watching his film, and also looking at how he ran in Michigan's spring game, I believe Savion Hiter will be a freshman All-American and, by the end of the season, will form a strong two-headed monster in Michigan's backfield with Jordan Marshall,” wrote Lucas Reimink.

In his prediction on SI on July 12, Lucas Reimink expressed that, because of him, Michigan could “boast the nation's best rushing attack in college football this season.”

Reimink expressed that since Hiter is one of the nation's top recruits, he is expected to open as Michigan's No. 2 running back behind Jordan Marshall.

How much production can he bring to Michigan this season?

Reimink expressed that since Donovan Edwards totaled 128 carries for 589 yards and four touchdowns in 2024, while Jordan Marshall rushed for 150 carries, 932 yards, and 10 touchdowns in 2024, Hiter could produce somewhere between those numbers this season.

Considering Hiter's 13-yards per carry over 110 rush attempts during his senior year at Louisa County High (VA), it isn't tough to see where the hype comes from.

While the analyst believes that Hiter will certainly have a good season, what do the coaches think?

Coaches are sold on Savion Hiter’s immediate impact

Regarded as one of the best running back prospects, Savion Hiter enters Michigan as the No. 12 overall recruit in the 2026 class after rushing for 1,445 yards and 25 touchdowns, and Michigan expects the same level of explosiveness from him.

Running backs coach Tony Alford even went as far as calling him one of the best talents he has coached when asked about him earlier this year.

“I think you’re getting an exceptionally explosive – like off-the-charts, explosive – athlete,” Alford said on On3. “Powerful kid when he moves. You watch him just doing some drill work or conditioning, and he’ll make a cut and change direction. It’s impressive.”

What stands out most to Alford is Hiter's potential, describing him as an “alpha” with a high football IQ who “has a chance to be a special player.”

“He’s going to be a contributor for us this year, without a doubt,” added Alford.

With both the coaches and the analyst saying the same thing, it will be interesting to see just how far Savion Hiter can go.

What do you think? Will he become the best running back in college at Michigan?
