ESPN’s college football ranking heaps high praise on Michigan head coach

Head coach Kyle Whittingham has yet to coach a single game for Michigan. But ESPN's panel of college football analysts already has him ranked among the best coaches in the country.

ESPN analyst Adam Rittenberg was the biggest supporter in the panel, ranking Whittingham as high as No. 6. He explained exactly what drives his confidence.

"I'm big on longevity, consistency and overperforming recruiting rankings and resource allocation, and Whittingham checked all of those boxes at Utah," Rittenberg said, per ESPN. "He has had one losing season since 2014, seven AP top-20 finishes and eight seasons of 10 or more wins, including last fall."

ESPN released its ranking of the top college football coaches heading into 2026, and Whittingham landed at No. 9. He comes in as the highest-ranked first-year head coach on the entire list.

Rittenberg's reasoning is grounded in a 21-year track record at Utah. Whittingham was not just winning games there. He was consistently doing more with less, finishing in the top 20 nationally against programs with far bigger budgets and recruiting footprints.

"I'm fascinated to see what he can do at a program like Michigan," Rittenberg said, per ESPN's July 9 report.

The fact that he has now arrived at Michigan, with better resources than he ever had in Salt Lake City, is what makes Rittenberg fascinated to see what comes next.

However, ESPN analyst Mark Schlabach was not feeling it. He left Whittingham off his top 10 and said exactly why.

"His teams lost four games or more in four straight seasons, including a 5-7 dud in 2024," Schlabach said, per ESPN. "His teams have lost in five straight bowl games."

Utah had a rough stretch, and Schlabach was not going to look past it. What he acknowledged at the same time is that a healthy quarterback, Cam Rising, likely changes at least some of those outcomes.

Schlabach also admitted Whittingham is a fantastic coach in the top dozen of the FBS and said he is curious to see what he does with Michigan's resources.

The panel ultimately put him at No. 9 with 17 total points. The ranking also noted one telling stat.

Since the 1978 FBS split, Whittingham is the only FBS coach to face Michigan at least three times and finish undefeated against them. His teams beat the Wolverines in 2008, 2014, and 2015.

He went 177-88 at Utah, the most wins in program history by any Utes coach in the modern era.

Kyle Whittingham has already set his own standard for year one

Outside praise is one thing. But what's even more significant is that Whittingham has already told Michigan exactly what he expects from himself.

"I expect to challenge for the Big Ten title every single year," Whittingham told reporters, per Maize n Brew. "That should be a given. Every single year, we should be right there with the top teams."

Michigan missed the College Football Playoff in back-to-back seasons under Sherrone Moore. Whittingham walked into a programme that needed a reset.

That kind of public commitment to the Big Ten title in year one is not cautious coach-speak. It is a direct statement about the standard he is setting from day one.

Do you think Whittingham can justify ESPN's praise and get Michigan back to the Playoff in his first season? Let us know in the comments.
