ESPN's Matt Miller asks for prayers ahead of critical prosthetic surgery
ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller is not done fighting. Three days after revealing his left arm was amputated following a serious car accident in Missouri, he posted another update on Friday that stopped people in their tracks. Miller took to X on June 26 to share what was ahead of him that day.
"Today's surgery is a big one," Miller wrote on X. "To find out if my shoulder can be reconstructed in order to support a prosthetic arm. Your continued thoughts and prayers are so appreciated."
That update hit hard because nothing about this surgery is guaranteed. The procedure is specifically done to determine whether his shoulder joint can even be rebuilt to hold a prosthetic. There is no certainty that it will be a success.
Miller was involved in a two-vehicle crash on June 17 in Jasper County, Missouri, when his 2023 Ford Bronco crossed the center line and struck a semi tractor-trailer. He was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Joplin. The driver of the semi was not injured.
Miller broke his silence on June 23 and shared what he had been through.
"As a result of the accident, I sustained significant injuries, including multiple fractures and broken ribs. I also underwent a life-saving amputation of my left arm," Miller wrote on X. "While I have a long road ahead, I'm focused on my recovery and taking things one day at a time."
Looking forward to getting back to normal life, he continued, saying:
"I look forward to continuing my recovery and getting back to ESPN to talk football, including what should be an exciting 2027 NFL Draft class," he wrote in the same post on X.
Despite the long and challenging recovery ahead, Miller has received an outpouring of support from the sports world
Pat McAfee, Adam Schefter, and ESPN colleagues donate to Miller’s GoFundMe
The support from inside the sports media world has been immediate and real.
Miller's family set up a GoFundMe to help cover medical costs, rehabilitation, travel, lodging, and prosthetic planning. The goal is $55,000.
"This GoFundMe has been created to help ease the financial burden on Matt and his family so they can focus on what matters most, his recovery," Miller's family wrote on the page, per Total Pro Sports.
Pat McAfee donated $5,525 to the fund. Adam Schefter, Pete Thamel, Jeremy Fowler, and Mina Kimes have all donated as well. The fund had already raised $37,350 toward its goal as of Friday.
We wish Miller the best of luck and hope that his surgery will be a success.
