Ex-NFL QB Blasts J.J. McCarthy's "Attitude" Against Kyler Murray at Vikings OTAs
With the quarterback competition brewing in the Minnesota Vikings camp, J.J. McCarthy took the heat. He was not criticized for his game, but for his attitude after competitors Kyler Murray and McCarthy spoke to the media for the first time together at OTA practice on May 27.
The two are competing for the starting job in 2026, and their answers about each other told different stories. One sounded like a mentor. The other sounded like a man sitting on the other side of the room.
"JJ this is the NFL brother," former NFL quarterback and CBS Sports analyst Ben DiNucci called out McCarthy directly on X after the clip circulated. "This type of attitude doesn't fly at the QB position. You have too many people watching how you talk / act."
Murray, who signed a one-year deal with the Vikings in March after being released by the Arizona Cardinals, was warm about the dynamic between the two.
"It's been great," said Murray. "Obviously, I know he's a younger guy, so any way I can help him. I've played seven years now going on eight, so I'm considered a veteran, even though I don't see myself as that. Give him any knowledge that he needs. He's overly accepting."
While Murray is new to the camp, McCarthy has been with the franchise since they selected him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the 10th overall pick.
When asked about his relationship with Murray, McCarthy’s response was fairly reserved.
"It's just like two guys in a classroom," said the former Michigan Wolverines quarterback. "He sits on one side, I sit on the other side. It's the coach's responsibility to teach us and coach us. "
According to him, there isn’t any awkwardness. McCarthy then compared the situation to casually noticing someone across the room in high school without it feeling uncomfortable.
McCarthy's answer may have been honest, but it also sparked discussion around the league. With his position heading into 2026, the timing was less than ideal.
J.J. McCarthy Enters 2026 With His Starting Job on the Line
McCarthy went 6-4 as a starter in 2025 but missed seven games due to an ankle sprain, a concussion, and a fracture in his throwing hand. In his NFL career so far, he has completed fewer than 58 percent of his passes and thrown 12 interceptions against 11 touchdowns.
In contrast, Murray, the two-time Pro Bowl veteran, is already gaining the hype with 67% completion rate and 121 touchdowns for more than 20,000 yards.
"He may not officially be QB1 yet, but it's merely a formality at this point,” CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan wrote. “Kyler Murray will, in all likelihood, be the Vikings' starter in 2026 after signing with the club this offseason."
The Vikings have told McCarthy it will be a true competition, but the numbers and the optics are both working against him. McCarthy acknowledged the situation was out of his hands.
"The organization made a decision that they feel like is going to improve the depth and quality of the room," he said, per CBS Minnesota.
With both McCarthy and Murray aiming to outshine each other, Minnesota will keep closely assessing each quarterback’s performance in practice.
Will McCarthy's interview affect Minnesota's decision? Let us know in the comments.
