Extreme Weather Forces Big Ten Football Program to Cancel Annual Tradition
The Iowa Hawkeyes football team had a tough Tuesday in Iowa City. The program runs one of the Big Ten's most well-known summer camp circuits, but extreme weather had other plans this week.
The program announced the cancellation of Lineman U Camp No. 2 on 9 June due to extreme weather in the forecast.
"Due to extreme heat and humidity in today's forecast, we have made the decision to cancel Lineman U Camp No. 2 today, Tuesday, June 9th," the team posted on X.
Families affected were directed to reach out to fb-clinics@uiowa.edu for rescheduling or refund details. The program apologized for the inconvenience and signed off with a "Go Hawks."
This was the second of three Lineman U Camp sessions scheduled for the summer. The first already ran on Sunday, May 31. The third is still set for 16 Jun at 4:30 pm in Iowa City, per Iowa Hawkeyes Athletics.
Each session runs for approximately three hours and costs $65.
"Offensive and defensive linemen will hone fundamentals and compete with their peers, learning valuable skills to perform on the football field," the Hawkeye Sport elaborated about the purpose of the camp. "The camp will be taught by the Iowa Football coaching staff."
Large portions of the United States are experiencing dangerously high temperatures as a heat wave sweeps across the country.
The cancellation was a tough call, but player safety came first. And with one session still on the calendar, there is still a chance for families to get their athletes on the field.
What Iowa's Summer Camp Program Looks Like in 2026
The Lineman U Camp is just one piece of Iowa's summer program. The Hawkeyes also run an Elite Skill Camp for quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, wide receivers, linebackers, and defensive backs.
Two Elite Skill Camp sessions are still coming up. One on 11 Jun and another on 18 Jun, both from 4:30 pm to 8 pm. Each session also costs $65 and is coached by the Iowa Football staff.
There is also a Specialist Camp for kickers, punters, and long snappers that already ran on 4 June. All three camp formats are open to incoming high school freshmen through seniors, and collegiate-eligible athletes can register too.
Registration for the remaining sessions is still open through Iowa Football's camps portal at iowasportscamps.com.
