Female Michigan staffer under Sherrone Moore leaves program amid Warde Manuel scrutiny
Michigan football is losing one of its longest-serving behind-the-scenes figures. The departure comes at one of the most turbulent moments in the program's recent history.
Abigail O'Connor, Michigan's Director of Football Performance and Development and head team nutritionist, announced Tuesday that she is leaving the program after nearly a decade with the Wolverines.
"Teams 139-147. Words cannot express the depth of gratitude I have for you and for this experience," O'Connor wrote on X. "Thank you, Michigan. Go Blue."
Those historical teams represent every Michigan squad she fueled from 2018 to 2026, a span that saw three different head coaches and a national championship.
O'Connor got the Michigan job through Harbaugh back in 2018. Houston and Minnesota were on her resume before Ann Arbor. When Jim Harbaugh left, she did not go with him. When Moore got fired and Whittingham showed up, she was still there.
When Moore took over and Ben Herbert left for the LA Chargers, Moore made a point of publicly retaining O'Connor alongside new strength coach Justin Tress.
"I am excited that both Justin and Abigail will remain an integral part of our program," Moore said at the time, per Maize n Brew. "They have been key ingredients in our success."
That endorsement showed how valued she was. She was not just keeping a job. She was being specifically held over as a pillar of the program's development infrastructure.
In her role, O'Connor oversaw the nutrition of over 100 student-athletes, supervised two dietitians and a nutrition operations staff member, and was credited by former players like Mazi Smith as a key figure in their physical development.
Her departure now comes just as Michigan faces its biggest internal crisis in years with the Warde Manuel investigation reaching a boiling point.
Warde Manuel’s future hangs over the program as the Board of Regents meets Thursday
Abigail O'Connor's exit is happening in the same week that Michigan's Board of Regents is scheduled to meet Thursday to receive findings from an independent investigation into the athletic department, per CBS Sports.
Athletic director Warde Manuel's job is reportedly on the line heading into Thursday's board meeting.
He has been Michigan's AD since 2016 and signed a five-year extension just last December.
If Manuel is dismissed following Thursday's meeting, Michigan will head into the 2026–27 academic year searching for a new athletic director while managing a completely overhauled football staff.
O'Connor's farewell drops right in the middle of all of it. Just one more thing happening in what has already been one of the most chaotic weeks Michigan athletics has seen in a long time.
What do you think about Michigan's continued off-field turbulence heading into the 2026 season? Let us know in the comments.
