Fierce Rivals Michigan Wolverines, Spartans Lock Horns for 4-Star Edge's Commitment
Michigan Wolverines secured their seventh recruit on May 9 with Jayce Brewer, an EDGE from Franklin Central in Indiana, who officially committed to the Wolverines. In this recruitment process, Kyle Whittingham's program competed with its in-state rivals, the Michigan State Spartans.
“Just getting to play for a historic program,” Brewer said. “All the history they have developing d-linemen. They have a great tradition there. They have the most wins in college football history. It’s just a great opportunity.”
According to On3, the 4-star-rated edge rusher and a defensive specialist known for his size and speed, is the No. 18 edge in the Rivals300 and the No. 5 recruit in Indiana.
The Wolverines' in-state and Big Ten conference rival, Michigan State, offered Brewer, along with other programs like the Indiana Hoosiers, the Oregon Ducks, among others.
The decision follows two successful visits to Ann Arbor this spring, including a trip for the program’s annual spring game.
As per reports from Zach Libby from Maize N Brew, during these visits, Brewer formed strong personal connections with the coaching staff, specifically defensive coaches Larry Black and Lewis Powell.
Explaining his choice, Brewer pointed to the program's reputation for developing elite talent.
“I would say the history of great defensive linemen they have produced and relationships that have been built with coaches,” he told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong.
In recent years, Michigan football has turned into a factory for first-round defensive linemen. Aidan Hutchinson became the No. 2 overall pick of the Detroit Lions in 2022, and three years later, Mason Graham followed as the No. 5 selection by the Cleveland Browns.
Brewer has the talent to have a promising future in Michigan. His impressive high school stats, including 31 tackles and nine tackles for loss last season, suggest he will be a vital part of the Wolverines' defense in the years to come.
He is scheduled to return to campus from June 19-21, during the Michigan Victor’s Weekend.
Jayce Brewer Is Excited To Play Under Kyle Whittingham
Under new head coach Whittingham, Michigan is known for having a very tough and aggressive defense. Brewer is excited to join the team and play under Whittingham and the new defensive leader, Jay Hill.
“They’ve had a great history at Utah and BYU," he said.
On the field, Brewer is a very smart and strong player. He stays low to the ground, which makes it hard for opponents to push him over. He is also fast and flexible enough to run around blockers and tackle the quarterback.
"Thick edge player that can slip blocks and create negative plays," wrote 247Sports' Andrew Ivins. "Young for the grade and is likely to undergo a major physical transformation in the coming years."
Brewer is joining another EDGE in the 2027 class, four-star Recarder Kitchen.
It's a big win for Michigan, which defeated in-state rivals Michigan State and other Big Ten programs running the race.
