Former college football player passes away at 51
The Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Famer and former NFL linebacker, Keith Mitchell, passed away at 51 years old, leaving behind a legacy that went far beyond anything he did on the field.
Texas A&M Athletics confirmed the news on July 3 on X. His family reported a sudden and unexpected passing, and no cause of death has been disclosed.
"On behalf of our entire family, we want to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming love, prayers and support that have surrounded Keith during this incredibly difficult time," the Mitchell family said in a statement to KBTX.
Mitchell played at Texas A&M from 1993 to 1996 and became one of the most dominant defensive players the program has ever seen. His 34 career sacks still rank fourth all-time at Texas A&M, ahead of Von Miller and Myles Garrett.
His senior year in 1996 was the highlight of his college career. He recorded 14.5 sacks and earned All-Big 12 and All-America honors. He was a key piece of the famous Wrecking Crew defense that helped lead the Aggies to the 1993 Southwest Conference title and a 10-0-1 season in 1994.
Every NFL team passed on him in the 1997 Draft because of his being undersized. The New Orleans Saints signed him as an undrafted free agent, and he never let anyone forget that decision.
He spent five seasons with New Orleans and became one of the most impactful players in Saints history. His 2000 season was career-defining, putting up 85 tackles, 6.5 sacks, including a franchise-record 90-yard fumble return, earning him a Pro Bowl selection.
That same season, he played a huge role as the Saints secured their first-ever playoff win, a 31-28 victory over the defending champion St. Louis Rams on December 30, 2000.
Texas A&M inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. A recognition that spoke to the kind of player and person he was during his time in College Station.
A spinal contusion suffered in 2003 left him temporarily paralyzed and ended his playing career. What came next defined him just as much as anything he did in uniform.
Keith Mitchell dedicated his life to healing others after his career-ending injury
After football, Mitchell turned to yoga and mindfulness, becoming a certified instructor and wellness advocate.
He founded the Light It Up Foundation, committing his post-football years to helping trauma survivors, veterans, first responders, and young people find healing, per Roundtable Sports.
His foundation's work touched thousands of lives across the country.
"Football was what I did; it wasn't who I was." Mitchell lived through this philosophy.
The football world lost a real one. We keep Keith Mitchell's family and loved ones in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
Leave your condolences and messages of support in the comments.
