Former Michigan Center Greg Crippen Signs With $6.5B NFL Franchise
The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their rookie camp, which took place from May 8 to May 10. On the last day, the $6.5 billion NFL giant added an undrafted free agent, a former Michigan Wolverine, who spent four years in Ann Arbor.
“The Steelers signed undrafted free agent center Greg Crippen,” reported Teresa Varley of Steelers.com.
Out of IMG Academy, Crippen was a member of Michigan's 2021 signing class and was a four-star recruit in high school. He appeared in 40 games during his time with the Michigan Wolverines football program, including starts in all 13 games last season.
The 6-foot-4 offensive lineman won a national championship with the team in 2023.
Weighing 309 pounds, Crippen showcased his athleticism at his pro day by running a 5.43 in the 40-yard dash and recording 24 reps on the 225-pound bench press. He earned a 5.03 RAS score, ranking 363rd among 729 offensive centers since 1987.
Even though the Steelers added Crippen, they ensured not to create a burden on their roster size. To balance things out, they released a former sixth-round pick.
According to the reports, Pittsburgh waived Sataoa Laumea to make space for Crippen. Laumea joined the Pittsburgh Steelers on a reserve/futures deal in January, but he did not take part in the rookie minicamp from May 8-10 because he was ineligible.
Prior to his release, the former Seattle Seahawks draft selection was listed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a guard on the team’s offseason roster.
Competition Greg Crippen Faces in the Pittsburgh Steelers
The former Michigan player is joining a unit where Zach Frazier is returning for the 2026 season and will be the starter. Other than Frazier, Crippen will be joining Ryan McCollum.
Like Frazier, Ryan McCollum has been on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster since 2024. He has mainly been used as a depth option on the interior offensive line, especially at center, where he logged two starts in 2024 and one last season.
Former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Brock Hoffman was also signed by the Steelers in free agency. It gives the team another experienced option at the position. After an eye-catching rookie minicamp, Crippen will now fight for a 53-man roster spot during training camp.
His PFF grade of 63.8 indicates he was not elite yet, but solid enough to hold a starting role in a competitive lineup.
