4-Star recruit humiliates Deion Sanders with 2 commitment flips in 36 hours

Four-star defensive lineman Ben'Jarvius Shumaker, out of Ackerman, Mississippi, had been committed to the Ole Miss Rebels since March 6.

On Monday, June 23, he posted on Instagram that he was shutting his recruitment down entirely. Less than 12 hours later, he flipped to Colorado Buffaloes, but that was not the final stop. Hours after that, Shumaker posted on X and made it clear the Colorado commitment was over.

"I apologize for any confusion that may have come over the last several hours," Shumaker wrote on X June 24. "This process has reaffirmed for me that Ole Miss is where I am meant to be. I believe in the vision for the program, the relationships my family and I have built in Oxford, and the opportunity."

That statement ended one of the wildest 36 hours in recent recruiting memory. He shut down his recruitment. Then flipped to Colorado. Then flipped right back to Ole Miss before the day was even over.

Rivals reporter Hayes Fawcett had been first to break the Colorado flip earlier in the day.

"Not even 24 hours ago, Ben'Jarvius Shumaker announced he was shutting down his recruitment with Ole Miss," Hayes Fawcett posted on X. "He just flipped to Colorado. Recruiting in 2026, man."

Shumaker's commitment came off as a recruiting boost for Colorado as he is the No.3 recruit in the state and No.9 running back, as per On3. The 6-foot-3 and 260-pounder recorded 113 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries in his junior season.

He had taken official visits to both Colorado and Texas Longhorns earlier this month while still committed to Ole Miss. Before the flip, Shumaker had laid out exactly what mattered most to him in recruitment.

"Wherever I feel like home is and can get me to the next level," Shumaker told InsideTexas, per On3.

In the end, that answer pointed him back to Oxford. While Sanders got humiliated in the process of recruiting Shumaker, he faced more roadblocks on the trail.

Colorado had a brutal Tuesday all around

As per On3's 2027 Football Team Recruiting Rankings, Colorado ranks at No. 39 with 16 recruits locked in. While Deion saw some hope with new recruitments, on Tuesday, June 23, he faced a reality check.

Other than Shumaker, Colorado also missed out on four-star defensive lineman Tyler Alexander earlier that same day, per Fawcett. Two defensive line targets gone in the span of a few hours.

Sanders came into 2026 already under pressure after going 3-9 in 2025 and finishing No. 15 out of 16 coaches in On3's Big 12 head coach rankings. Days like Tuesday make the rebuild look longer than it already is.
