Four-star WR commits to BYU over Ohio State
BYU has landed a sought-after wide receiver for its 2027 class. On June 27, Blake Wong committed to the BYU Cougars and rejected over 15 offers, including the formidable Ohio State.
“In the end, it was BYU's unique recruiting pitch that won out. Wong was BYU's top target at wide receiver over the last several months,” BYU Cougars on Sports Illustrated reported on June 27.
Wong is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When BYU did a devotional in Southern California last month, Wong was in attendance.
The Norco player had offers from Ohio State, Oregon, UCLA, and Utah. He even visited some of his programs. Last weekend, he was in Columbus for his official visit with Ohio State. Before that, he also paid a visit to Oregon, Utah, and UCLA.
The Cougars’ latest commitment is a testament to the program’s wide receiver coach, Fesi Sitake. According to the SI report, Sitake has landed many top targets. On the 247 Sports rating, Wong was ranked 244th and 36th on his position chart on a national scale.
In the composite ratings, he stood at 345 nationwide and 50th as a wide receiver. This is a win for the program, as Wong was chased by programs like Ohio State.
“Wong has good size at 6'2 and 180 pounds. He is agile enough to evade tacklers in the open field, and he possesses enough speed to break away from defenders,” Casey Lundquist wrote.
Wong is a multi-sport athlete who runs track. According to MileSplit, he ran a sophomore in the 100m race in a season-best of 11.17 seconds. He took 22.69 seconds to finish the 200m race. As a freshman in Murrieta (California), he posted an 11.33 seconds in the 100m in Spring 2024.
That season, he finished with 40 receptions for 577 yards and 5 TDs on 14.4 yards per catch.
Blake Wong's record-shattering high school performance
While reporting on BYU’s newest WR addition, writer Casey Lundquist opined on what makes Blake Wong such a good catch.
“What makes Wong special, in the opinion of this author, is his balance and his hands,” he wrote. “His balance allows him to run efficient routes, adjust when the ball is in the air, and makes plays after the catch. He is a reliable target in contested situations, and he has a unique ability to make tough catches over his shoulders.”
In his junior year, Wong surpassed a few Norco High School records. In just 10 games, he tallied a school-record 1,469 yards. Essentially, he averaged 147 receiving yards per game. With 20 touchdowns, Wong also surpassed the school receiving touchdowns record.
He also broke the single-game receiving record with 280 receiving yards against his former school, Murrieta Valley High School.
