Georgia Draft Prospect Arrested on Misdemeanor Charges

With the 2026 NFL draft approaching, Zachariah Branch has been in the spotlight as a potential Day 2 pick. Now, there seems to have been a sudden development involving the authorities.

According to NFL Writer Arye Pulli's X post, Georgia Bulldogs' Zachariah Branch was taken into custody in Athens, Georgia, early on Sunday (April 19, 2026) for reportedly obstructing a public sidewalk.

He also allegedly obstructed a law enforcement officer and failed to clear the space after being asked to do so.

Branch had been in Athens to attend Georgia’s spring game to support his brother, Zion Branch, who plays as a safety.

As per police reports, he was approached by a law enforcement officer a few hours after the game while standing on a sidewalk outside a nightclub.

When a crowd began to form, the officer reportedly asked Branch to move. ESPN noted that he warned that the latter was blocking a public sidewalk, and warned that failure to comply would lead to the player being given a citation.

Eventually, Branch failed "to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands."

According to Athens-Clarke County’s official website, Zachariah Branch was booked at 1:26 AM on Sunday. He was eventually released on bail a couple of hours later, at 4:10 AM on a $39 cash bond.

While the wide receiver's agency is yet to release a statement regarding the matter, many eyes are also on the Draft this week. With various NFL teams looking for a receiver, could Branch be picked up on Day 2?

Zachariah Branch’s chances in the NFL Draft

Zachariah Branch’s timing seems unfortunate, especially with him being high up among potential picks.

He is hailed as a promising wide receiver from the Georgia Bulldogs, known for his explosive plays and speed, and scored 81 catches for 811 yards and 6 touchdowns last year.

Branch has been a popular choice projected to the Atlanta Falcons as a No. 2 receiver. However, this last-minute brush with the law might affect his chances of being drafted.

For the NFL's Steve Smith Sr., it is all about the right fit, and the New Orleans Saints offer the perfect landing spot for Zachariah Branch.

With 2026 being Zachariah Branch’s debut in the NFL, one can only hope that he will get the opportunity to show his skills.
