Got to Keep Up: Michigan Football HC Issues Strong College Football Warning
The college football landscape has been rapidly changing ever since the name, image, and likeness (NIL) has taken over, and that is only going to keep evolving over the years, and the new Michigan head coach knows what it takes to survive.
Michigan head football coach, Kyle Whittingham, who has also been a part of college football for more than three decades, issues a stern warning on where collegiate football is headed.
“Again, it’s in that order of importance. There’s going to be several teams in this ’27 recruiting cycle that are $50 million-plus rosters. You’ve either got to keep up and embrace that or embrace irrelevance because it’s not changing, at least, right away," said Kyle Whittingham.
Collegiate football can be seen as a minor league to the NFL. This can be seen in the sport of Baseball, where you have MLB (Major League Baseball) and MiLB (Minor League Baseball), which serves as a farm system to prepare players for professional baseball.
“The biggest thing that needs to … have some parameters and guardrails put on it is the NIL, which essentially is a salary cap. That’s the direction we’ve got to head,” Whittingham declared.
A salary cap is something professional leagues use, like the NFL, where a team is only allowed to spend a set amount, determined by the league. In this case, the NCAA needs to step in and maybe offer an NIL cap where schools can only spend so much on their rosters.
The Indiana Hoosiers, who had themselves a season spent closer to the $15 million mark than the originally reported $40 million mark. Depending on the schools and boosters, that number can skyrocket if there is no rule in place on how much a school can spend.
Kyle Whittingham Is Ready for the NIL Era
There has been a lot of chopping and changing done at Ann Arbor for the 2026 season. Right from Kyle Whittingham himself replacing Sherrone Moore.
Whittingham has also made changes up and down the front office as he sees fit, and one of these changes is hiring Dave Peloquin as general manager, who replaced Sean Magee.
Peloquin held various roles at Notre Dame from 2004 to 2023 before moving to Athletes First, a premier NIL agency and full-service management firm. And now he makes the move as general manager for the Wolverines.
Peloquin, who is well-versed with NIL after spending a few years as an intercollegiate division general manager at Athletes First, will help Whittingham and the Wolverines understand the rapidly growing NIL era.
