HBCU Coach Passes Away at 58 After Battling Cancer
Former Howard University assistant coach Warren Belin passed away on Friday, May 1st, at the age of 58 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Belin had a three-decade-long career spanning various college programs and the NFL. These include teams such as Howard, James Madison, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Georgia, SMU, and the Carolina Panthers.
Last year, Wake Forest honored Belin's resilience with the Pete Moffett Courage Award after his diagnosis.
According to a story published by Clutch Points, "many remember him (Belin) as a coach who demanded excellence while genuinely caring about the growth of the young men he led."
Belin coached for Howard University from 2020 to 2024. He earned respect for his style of coaching and connection with student-athletes.
The Howard University football team shared a post on its Instagram handle to honor its former coach. The post was captioned,
"Sending our deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and the entire HUFB community as we honor the life and legacy of Coach Belin. A true pillar of our program, Coach Belin walked in faith and led with purpose."
In addition to his college career, Belin served as a linebacker coach for the Carolina Panthers. And one of Belin’s notable proteges included Luke Kuechly, who eventually became the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
A Look Back At Coach Belin's Life
Warren Elliot Belin was born on October 20, 1967, in Monroe, NC, to John Edward Belin and Janie Clark Belin. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1990 and played as a linebacker. Playing across four seasons, he concluded his career with 236 tackles in 30 starts.
Belin was deeply religious and a faithful member of Center Grove Church. He is survived by his wife, Yolanda Taylor Belin, and three daughters, Camryn Celeste Belin, MacKenzi Nicole Belin, and Morgan Taylor Belin.
The Instagram post by Howard University also added, "Grounded in God, devoted to his wife and daughters, and committed to the game he loved, he was more than a coach. He was a teacher, a mentor, and a powerful example of what it means to show up as a man first and a football coach second."
The family is slated to hold his funeral at the Center Grove church, Clemmons, NC, on May 16th, according to his Obituary.
