He Was 3rd String: Controversial HC Lane Kiffin's Son Trolls Him Over Short-Lived CFB Career
The head coach of the LSU Tigers, Lane Kiffin, was mocked by his son for his forgettable college playing career, which made social media laugh. The comment caught the attention of fans who know Kiffin for his coaching antics.
The University Lab High School's (U-High) quarterback, Knox Kiffin's playful jab at his father led to discussions about Kiffin's unusual path to football fame, reminding fans that his impact on the sport comes from the sidelines.
"He wasn't great at all," said Kiffin's son, talking about his dad's collegiate career. "I'm definitely trying to be better than him. He was the third string, so I don't want to do that."
The comment highlights an overlooked chapter of Kiffin's football journey. He arrived at Fresno State hoping to play quarterback from 1994-96, but lost the starting role to future NFL No. 1 pick David Carr, per Sports Illustrated's Michael Kadlick.
Kiffin's urge to play faded quickly, and he shifted towards coaching while still in school. Surprisingly, that disappointing outcome shaped one of football's greatest coaching careers. He embraced coaching early and began climbing the ranks quickly.
He holds a college coaching record of 117-53 across 14 seasons. He secured two consecutive Conference USA championships while coaching Florida Atlantic (2017-2019). He led the Rebels to multiple New Year's Six appearances and their best season of 11-2 in school history in 2023.
Kiffin has coached at Tennessee, USC, Florida Atlantic, Ole Miss, and LSU. The 50-year-old coach's online presence has earned him a reputation as one of college football's biggest trolls.
Lane has spent years building a reputation as one of college football's most polarizing figures, whether through high-profile exits, social media jabs, or public feuds.
But while the Ole Miss coach continues to generate headlines, his son Knox is beginning to attract attention for a very different reason, making waves on the high school stage.
Lane Kiffin's son Knox Kiffin Prepares For His Junior Season
Lane Kiffin's son Knox Kiffin is quietly making his own football journey, preparing for his junior season at the high school level.
"I am definitely trying to be better than him," and "I wanna be as good as I can," as per reporter Chessa Bouche's X post about his recent interview.
Known for his football IQ and strong understanding of the game, Knox has benefited from growing up around sports' top coaches and players.
He threw for 1,236 yards and 14 touchdowns during his sophomore year at Oxford.
Knox was the backup but took over as the starter after an injury to the starting quarterback. He led the team to multiple wins, including a game-winning touchdown pass in overtime against Germantown at Oxford.
With two more seasons before graduation, Knox enters his junior year looking to take another step forward and commit himself as a promising QB.
