How isn’t he fired: Fans angered after Ad Warden Manuel proposes jersey change

Is the iconic maize-and-blue merch getting a makeover? Well, the Michigan Wolverines’ athletic director, Warde Manuel, has said so. The AD has shared a proposal involving jersey patches and Big House ads.

“Michigan AD Warde Manuel hints jersey patches, Big House ads coming: ‘We must look at new, innovative revenue streams,’” The Wolverine posted on June 19.

In this new era of college sports affected by NIL and transfer portals, the Wolverines’ athletic department has been looking for ways to increase revenue. In the last year, the Big House is looking forward to adding outdoor concerts to its repertoire.

Last fall, the field hosted Zach Bryan and has two Morgan Wallen concerts lined up this summer. On-field advertising and in-game sponsorships appear to be the next big move the department makes.

“To consistently compete for championships across all 29 of our varsity sports, we must look at new, innovative revenue streams,” Manuel wrote in an email to athletics supporters. “Crucially, this includes expanding our support for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) to build and sustain the championship-caliber rosters you expect.”

He mentions the 2023 football national championship, this year’s men’s basketball national championship, and seven Big Ten Championships during the 2025-26 academic year in his email.

“I have great respect for Michigan Stadium’s long, storied, and distinguished history. We will work to ensure that any advertising is implemented strategically, tastefully,” the email read about the Big House.”

Manuel and Co. are intent on holding their edge in college football and bringing these changes to Ann Arbor. Fans, however, are livid over these ideas and called him out online.

Fans vehemently disagree with Michigan athletic department’s new ideas

Under ON3’s X post reporting the proposals brewing in Michigan AD’s office, fans expressed their disappointment. One fan even questioned how Warde Manuel has kept his job after this.

“Luckily Michigan football is a sedan. How does this guy still have a job? Seriously? Everything that’s happened to that athletic department- how isn’t he fired?!?!” one fan wrote in the comments.

This fan called the program a Sedan in reply to another comment with a strong analogy.

“You don’t put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari,” the initial remark read.

“And Warde is back to being on the bad side of the fans again,” one said as fans criticize this development.

“Make them cgi not physically on field yuck ..big house is sacred u money greedy f******,” another comment said, offering a new strategy.

One fan revealed that adding logos on jersey crosses a line for them.

“Putting logos on the field is one thing but logos on the jerseys is a huge hell no from me.”

Michigan fans are not willing to have their beloved maize and blue identity commercially tampered with. Will the decision-makers listen? What do you think of this?
