“I am the villain now”: Michigan commit sends strong message after ditching Ohio State
Michigan just pulled off a big one in the state of Ohio. And the recruit himself made sure everyone knew exactly what he was doing.
Four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr. committed to Michigan on July 1, choosing the Wolverines over Ohio State and Indiana, as first reported by Rivals' Hayes Fawcett. But when he made his announcement, Torbert didn't stay quiet about what it meant.
"I guess I'm the villain now, GOBLUE," Torbert said, per Hayes Fawcett on X.
Torbert is from Cincinnati, attending Princeton High School right in Ohio State's backyard. Picking Michigan over the Buckeyes from there takes a certain kind of confidence.
The last time Michigan walked into Ohio and took a top prospect away from Ohio State was the 2024 class. This one stings for the Buckeyes because Michigan special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs is a Cincinnati native who knows that recruiting territory better than almost anyone.
Defensive coordinator Jay Hill also made clear he wanted Torbert in his secondary. Torbert visited Ohio State the weekend before his official visit to Ann Arbor for Victors Weekend, and there were real doubts he'd even show up at Michigan. He did. And it changed everything.
The numbers show why both programs wanted him so badly. At high school, Torbert threw for 1,791 yards and 26 touchdowns while also recording 40 tackles and three interceptions on defense.
Rivals analyst Allen Trieu's scouting report broke down his game and liked what he saw. Quick feet, good range, jumps routes well, and has the speed to stay with receivers on vertical routes.
Michigan loses Rod Moore and Zeke Berry after this season too. That's two starters walking out the door. Torbert is exactly the kind of kid Hill needs to start filling that gap.
Monsanna Torbert becomes Michigan’s fifth secondary commitment
Torbert joins Tavares Harrington, Blake Jenkins, Charles Woodson Jr. and Darius Johnson in Michigan's 2027 secondary commitments, per Sports Illustrated.
Harrington flipped from Notre Dame. Jenkins was an Alabama target. Woodson is the son of Michigan legend Charles Woodson, picking Michigan over Florida State, Texas A&M, and Oregon, and Johnson chose Michigan over Oregon, USC, and UCLA.
Jay Hill runs a defense that demands athletic, versatile cornerbacks who can cover and tackle, and every one of those commits fits that mold.
Michigan's 2027 class is currently sitting inside the top 10 nationally on Rivals. With five secondary commits locked in, the staff consistently beat out power programs to build this class.
Do you think Michigan can keep building this defensive class into one of the best in the country? Let us know in the comments.
