I Feel for Joey McGuire: Texas Legend Sympathizes With Rival HC Over Sorsby Fiasco
The unprecedented turnout of the Brendan Sorsby lawsuit has shaken the college football community. As debate over his eligibility to play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders rages on, it has drawn out a reaction from head coach Mack Brown.
“I feel for Joey McGuire because he's got a mess, because it's really not even his decision. He got a lot of bosses telling him what to do, and it's really public,” the legendary coach said on June 11.
The former Texas Longhorns’ head coach was in conversation with The Stampede and revealed the dilemma his Red Raiders’ counterpart, Joey McGuire, will face with Sorsby on the team.
The 22-year-old quarterback is under investigation for g******* and placing b***.
He, however, countered the NCAA in a lawsuit, seeking an injunction over eligibility to play.
A Texas judge granted him the injunction. Sources state Judge Ken Curry ruled that prohibiting Sorsby from resuming his football activities would cause him to “suffer probable, imminent, and irreparable injury.”
Sorsby, who was a part of the Indiana Hoosiers in 2022 and placed b*** on the team, hasn’t played a single at Texas Tech. He is suspended from the first two games of this season.
“And, Vince just said it, but now, if we let Sorensby play and I’m the head coach, what happens to the guy that gets the DUI tonight? Do I suspend him for a game, but I let Sorensby play for g******* $9,000?” Brown, a Hall of Fame coach, asked.
According to court documents, Sorsby placed over a thousand b*** totaling over $90,000. From those, he placed at least 40 on the Hoosiers in 2022 as a freshman. As college football searches for a solution for this scenario, Brown had shared his take on it.
Mack Brown’s Way Forward Post Brendan Sorsby Temporary Injunction
Former Texas head coach of 16 years, Mack Brown, who held a 158-48 record, put himself in Joey McGuire’s shoes and stated what he’d do.
“I would let him go to the supplementary draft, let him still play. Try to help him, support him, pay for all of his counseling,” he said on the Stampede podcast. “So if this doesn’t get backed overturned by the NCAA and Congress doesn’t give the NCAA help, I think we see huge changes coming up because it can't stay like it is.”
After the events turned out in quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s favor, NCAA president Charlie Baker called for Congressional action.
Many athletic directors are engaging in “serious talks” over boycotting the Texas Tech Red Raiders for letting this escalate so far. In his statement, Texas Tech’s AD, Kirby Hocutt, stated the program is determined to help Sorsby.
“The integrity of sport matters. So does the integrity of how we treat a 22-year-old who sought help, entered residential treatment, and is working every day toward recovery,” he said on June 10.
Sorsby’s NCAA violation has generated a lot of conflict and jeopardized how the team functions from now on. What happens next is uncertain, as college football navigates this unknown situation.
