I Got My Life Back: Cancer-free Deion Sanders Opens Up After 16 Surgeries

The ever-fiesty Deion Sanders faced some tough times with his health in recent years. The Colorado Buffs coach announced that he is now cancer-free and ready to take on life again.

“I'm cancer-free. I'm good,” Sanders said on Good Morning America this week. “Great doctors in Colorado that [have] brought me through. God has brought me through. I'm thankful, I'm healthy. I got my swagger back. Like, I'm ready to go, coach my b*** off. And I'm having a good time.”

On July 28, 2025, at a news conference ahead of the last season, Coach Prime shared that he was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer. According to Our Cancer Story, the former Super Bowl champion underwent surgery to remove his bladder.

Although he had been vocal about his battle against cancer, Coach Prime underwent over 16 surgeries from 2021. He revealed that he also underwent a thrombectomy in his left leg to deal with recurring blood clots.

According to reports, his doctor, Janet Kukreja, said that “Sanders’ tumor was fortunately discovered in time,” which resulted in a favorable prognosis since he showed no signs of any issues.

“But early detection was key getting on it early, because you know amputation, so they were checking for something else and stumbled upon this. So early detection helped me out tremendously,” the 58-year-old revealed on national television.

Sanders’ health issues came at a significant stage in his life. In 2025, his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, had declared for the draft, and Deion wanted to ensure he provided them support throughout.

“I knew as well I had a surgery coming up. My sons, to this day, don’t know what transpired. I just told them it was something with my foot, because I wanted to give them the focus on making the team and not focused [sic] on dad,” he said per the April 17 report.

While Shilo, the older of the two, went undrafted, Shedeur was picked 144th overall by the Cleveland Browns. Sanders recovered and returned to coaching at Boulder but faced some lingering issues. As he emerged victorious over one challenge, he has to face another one.

Deion Sanders On Coaching The Colorado Buffs For The 2026 Season

When Deion Sanders first took on the role in 2022, he drew out fans in a crowd of over 48,000 to the picturesque Folsom Field.

However, his support from fans has been dwindling since because of his mediocre 16-21 record. When asked about what his motto is with the second chance he got, his answer was short.

“Winning,” Sanders replied. “And I’m healthy. I got my health back. I got my swagger back ... I got my me back. You know, last year, this time, I’m fighting cancer. Didn’t know which way it was gonna go…But I'm fully back now.”

Coach Prime, a Hall of Famer, signed a five-year, $54 million contract extension that runs through till 2029. Whether his fourth year coaching the Buffs changes things or not, remains to be seen.
