I Play Hard: Jimmy Rolder Sends Strong Message to Beef Up Lions' LB Room

On the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions strengthened their Michigan defence by selecting Jimmy Rolder, a University of Michigan linebacker with the 118th overall pick in the fourth round. In response, Rolder has shared what makes him an asset.

"I just play hard. I'm a tough, physical player—high effort, and a strong leader and communicator on the field," Rolder said, regarding his fit with the team. "I think I play very smart. I know a lot of football and a lot of schemes, and I just think I fit the mold of what they're looking for."

The Lions entered the draft with a significant gap in their linebacker lineup after losing veteran leader Alex Anzalone to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.

For Rolder, the road to a starting spot won't be without its challenges. He will have to compete with established veterans like Malcolm Rodriguez and Damone Clark for playing time.

Jimmy Rolder is ready to take a shot at his NFL career

Jimmy Rolder joined Michigan in 2022 after a major career pivot from baseball to the NFL.

His breakthrough only arrived in the year 2025 with seven TFLs and 73 combined tackles. Before he was drafted, he shared his enthusiasm, stating to  Sports Illustrated.

"I’m excited to contribute and compete on an NFL defense. I’m excited to play special teams as well. I’m willing to do whatever it takes as a rookie. I’m going to make an impact, whether as a backup linebacker or as the starter."

Overall, Rolder wants to have a successful career in the NFL. He can make an immediate impact on the team even if he doesn't play linebacker because of his experience on special teams.
