I want to Go: Michigan Football at Risk of Losing Legacy Recruit to Dan Lanning's Ex-Staffer
Kyle Whittingham and staff may lose out on Charles Woodson Jr. after the safety has been considering pledging to the University of Kentucky.
Interestingly, the head coach is Will Stein, who was the offensive coordinator of the Oregon Ducks under Dan Lanning.
The University of Kentucky hosted Charles Woodson on March 28, 2026. The Blue and White are working around the clock to ensure that Woodson considers Kentucky.
“I’m excited to learn more about Kentucky. I liked the visit. It’s definitely a school I think I want to go to, so we’ll see,” said Woodson.
Woodson is the son of the NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl winner Charles Woodson, who famously wore the blue and maize of Michigan from 1995 to 97 while winning the 1997 Heisman and 1997 National Championship.
For the Wolverines, Woodson Jr. is a legacy recruit, given that his father played there.
Woodson is a three-star safety out of Lake Nona, Orlando, Florida. Kentucky cornerback coach Allen Brown extended the offer to Woodson Jr.
“During the visit, I sat in Coach Bateman’s office, and we went over the defense, things he runs, and went over my film. He showed me the things I need to work on. That meeting, overall, was easily my favorite part of the trip. It showed me how much he knows about defenses,” said Woodson Jr.
On3’s website states that Woodson Jr. will commit to Michigan at 99.8% for the class of 2027. But will there be an upset in this legacy recruit, and he commits to the Wildcats?
How Is the Recruitment Process Going for Charles Woodson Jr.?
The safety is trying to make the most out of this, but at the same time is feeling the stress that comes with a decision like this.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so you have to take it day by day,” said Woodson Jr.
He has already visited USF (University of South Florida), Wake Forest, Kentucky, and Louisville. The elephant in the room, Michigan, is up next on the three-star prospect’s radar.
“Obviously, it’s a new coaching staff, too. I don’t know too much, but I got to sit down and talk to coach (Tyler) Stockton, the safeties coach. I got to meet Coach (Kyle) Whittingham,” said Woodson Jr.
He further added, “It was a good first impression, Coach Whittingham is establishing a culture over there, an old school culture. I think it’ll be good for Michigan.”
