JJ McCarthy Gets Harsh Verdict, drawing Tim Tebow-like NFL Concerns Amid Rams Interest

JJ McCarthy did not have to wait long after leading the Michigan Wolverines to the Natty. Taken as the No.10 pick in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings, McCarthy has already picked up trade talks this season. With the Los Angeles Rams in the picture, the quarterback received a harsh update.
McCarthy is rumored to switch from the Vikings to the Rams. But does he fit into Sean McVay’s system? In a simple response to the question, the answer would be no. McVay, the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, expects a few things out of his quarterback, and that is non-negotiable.
“The entire McVay offense is predicated on the ability to diagnose beneficial matchups pre-snap before executing throws post-snap,” highlighted Brock Viera of the Rams Wire.
According to the analyst, McCarthy, with only one season in the pro league, will be biting more than he can chew if he steps into Los Angeles. For a young quarterback like him, it will be difficult to read the defense and identify the mismatches.
“That pre-snap determination, where the quarterback has some idea of where he’s going with the ball, is a dangerous game with a passer who lacks the ability to properly exploit coverages and who is able to play from the pocket. McCarthy can’t do either,” Viera further added.

McCarthy already has too many things on his plate. He has struggled with accuracy issues. Out of 37 quarterbacks who logged at least 100 dropbacks, McCarthy came last with a 53.7% completion percentage and a 65.8 passer rating.
It was followed up with McCarthy getting sacked 27 times last season. The JJ McCarthy situation can be compared to that of the former NFL quarterback, Tim Tebow. He, too, dealt with accuracy issues and was not a great passer of the football. Even Tebow found it hard to read defenses.
In 2011, Tebow, the former Denver Broncos quarterback, completed 46.4 percent of his passes. His second-year stint in the NFL ranked him No. 48 among all NFL quarterbacks.
Decades later, McCarthy finds himself in the same spot. Yet then, support poured in from the Rams squad.
What Did This Former Teammate Say About JJ McCarthy?
The Minnesota Vikings have signed Kyler Murray after McCarthy had a poor 2025 showing. The former Michigan quarterback appeared in only 10 games and passed for 1,632 yards while having 12 passing touchdowns.
Not to forget, the quarterback struggled as he threw 12 interceptions. The advanced metrics just do not look good.
But McCarthy’s former teammate, Blake Corum, the Los Angeles Rams running back, had words of support for his former Michigan mate. After all, the duo tasted success together in college, winning the national championship at Michigan.
“The ceiling is so high for J.J (McCarthy). You’ve got to think, his rookie year, he went down with the injury, last year, he had a bunch of injuries, as well, so he hasn’t been on the field much. He hasn’t really had a lot of playing time that quarterbacks need,” Corum said in McCarthy's defense.
For Corum, McCarthy's fighting spirit stands out after battling back-to-back injuries last season. But at the end of the day, the Vikings quarterback needs a green signal from McVay.
