Joel Klatt reveals key advantage Ryan Day holds over Kyle Whittingham
Kyle Whittingham is about to find out what Michigan vs Ohio State really means. And according to Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt, nothing can prepare him for it until he's actually in it.
On The Joel Klatt Show, Klatt ranked the legendary rivalry as the most pivotal matchup of the entire 2026 college football season.
"Kyle Whittingham's first, and his stint as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. He's going to find out real quick what Ryan Day knows all too well, which is you are judged based on this game," Klatt said on the Joel Klatt Show.
Day understands the weight of this game in a way that only comes from carrying it badly for four years. Whittingham is stepping into that environment for the first time with no frame of reference.
Klatt also framed the stakes on Ohio State's side.
"If you miss the playoffs as the Ohio State Buckeyes, life is not going to be good," he said on the Joel Klatt show on June 29.
Four straight losses to Michigan from 2021 through 2024. Years of the same noise: great recruiter, great scorer, can't beat the team up north. Last year he finally got the win, 27-9 in Ann Arbor, and you could see what it meant to him.
"We're going to win with humility. I'm just happy for a lot of people right now," Day said in his post-game interview. "I can't name them all, but it means a lot."
Day faces Indiana, Oregon and Texas before November, meaning he could arrive at The Game with losses already on his record.
Michigan's side isn't easier. Klatt pointed out the Wolverines open with Western Michigan, then Oklahoma, and face a brutal Big Ten schedule too. The way he sees it, a Michigan win over Ohio State could punch Whittingham straight into the College Football Playoff.
Day knows what losing this game at home does to a fanbase. That knowledge is his biggest advantage over Whittingham heading into November.
Ryan Day has never won the game in Columbus, and that pressure doesn’t go away
Ryan Day's record in this rivalry comes with a very specific problem. He has never beaten Michigan at home, going 0-2 in Columbus.
Ohio State hosts Michigan on November 28, 2026. If Day loses The Game at home again, Klatt's words about being judged on this game apply just as much to him as they do to Whittingham.
Klatt's words about being judged on this game don't just apply to Whittingham. Day lost to Indiana in the Big Ten Championship and to Miami in the CFP Quarterfinals last season. Another loss to Michigan at home would reignite every conversation about his ability to win the games that matter most.
That's the reality both coaches are dealing with. Day has felt that pressure before and survived it. Whittingham is about to feel it for the first time.
Do you think Whittingham can pull off the upset at Ohio State in year one? Let us know in the comments.
