Lane Kiffin Accuses Alabama Of Retiring Nick Saban In Controversial Take

Louisiana State University head coach Lane Kiffin said something this week that nobody expected. While discussing coaching tenures and his move from Ole Miss, he suggested Alabama had pushed Nick Saban into retirement.

And just like that, the college football world had a new topic to argue about.

"I was torn. And when I called Coach Saban and talked it through with him, he said, you know, Lane, you'll always regret if you don't go to LSU. It's the best job in America," Kiffin said per WAFB's Jacques Doucet. "And when he said that, that really made the decision for me."

The comments came during an interview with Blake Toppmeyer of SEC Football Unfiltered from the USA Today network. Kiffin was talking about how coaching jobs rarely work out long-term when he made the remark, per SEC Mike on X.

"This isn't a marriage that's going to last forever, most likely, even though you think it is, where both parties are happy, and neither one wants out. You could wish it was, it's a feel-good story, but they don't happen, rarely ever," Kiffin said.

When Toppmeyer brought up Saban's name as a possible exception, Kiffin did not let it slide.

"I don't even want to go into names here. Like, these are some names that you would say it happened, and I would tell you that in the coaching profession, that actually, it didn't because right at the end, they made them retire," Kiffin said.

The comment landed like a grenade. For Kiffin to suggest that Alabama forced Saban out is not something that went unnoticed, especially given their history together.

Kiffin and Saban's Complicated History Goes Back Years

Kiffin had served as Saban's offensive coordinator at Alabama from 2014 to 2016, including during a national championship season.

Per CBS Sports, Alabama and Kiffin mutually agreed to part ways before the 2017 CFP National Championship after he had already accepted the Florida Atlantic job.

The two maintained a relationship since, with Saban playing a direct role in Kiffin's decision to leave Ole Miss for LSU. But Kiffin's latest comments about Saban's retirement add a new and uncomfortable layer to a bond that has never been simple.

Kiffin signed a seven-year, $91 million deal with LSU in January 2026 after posting a 55-19 record across six seasons at Ole Miss.

There is no official statement proving that Alabama had pressured Saban to retire. But whatever Kiffin meant by the remark, it is not going away quietly.
