Latest Update In Brendan Sorsby Injunction Case Following NCAA Move

Brendan Sorsby's college football future has been hanging by a thread for weeks now. Monday morning, June 1, was a crucial date for him.

Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback had a court date on Monday. His temporary injunction hearing against the NCAA was set for 9 a.m. CT at Lubbock County Court. As per the latest reports, the biggest question remains unanswered.

"There was no immediate ruling from Senior Judge Ken Curry after the two-hour hearing, or any indication of when he would rule on a temporary injunction against the NCAA," reported FOX Sports on June 1.

The Texas Tech quarterback reportedly did not appear at the hearing in Lubbock County's 99th District Court.

Here is how things got to this point. Sorsby placed at least 40 bets involving Indiana Hoosiers while he was their quarterback. He used accounts registered to family members and friends to wager roughly $90,000 over four years. The gambling did not stop even after he transferred to Texas Tech in January 2026.

The NCAA rejected his reinstatement request last week. Texas Tech filed an appeal recommending a two-game suspension.

The NCAA is not backing down either. In their own court filing. According to a filing made last week, the NCAA warned that issuing the injunction could undermine its policies by allowing an athlete who wagered on his own contests to continue competing.

Sorsby checked into a gambling addiction rehab center in mid-April and completed a 35-day stint at an Arizona facility. Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec wrote a letter laying out his take.

"He is not the first college athlete to face gambling addiction, and unfortunately, he will not be the last," Schovanec wrote. "Given that Brendan has taken accountability for his addiction and actions, a brave act in any circumstance, but especially under the intense scrutiny of a national spotlight, we believe that the best path forward for him is on campus, among his teammates."

Sorsby passed on the NFL Draft this spring to come back to college. Since no concrete decision was made on Monday, the NFL supplemental draft is the next option. The deadline to file paperwork is June 22.

What Brendan Sorsby Brought to the Table Before The Injunction

At Cincinnati Bearcats in 2025, he threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 61.6 percent completion rate. Those numbers put him among the most productive quarterbacks in the country that season.

He transferred to Texas Tech in December and was considered one of college football's top quarterbacks heading into 2026. The Red Raiders built their entire offseason around him being their weapon under center.

Representing Sorsby, attorney Jeffrey Kessler, who previously negotiated the House settlement against the NCAA, urged the court to rule by June 15.

The timing is significant, as it comes just one week before the deadline for Sorsby to enter the NFL supplemental draft should he remain ineligible for the upcoming season.
