Longhorns Hit With Bad News as Florida Tries to Poach Its 5-Star Commit

Easton Royal is the most coveted wide receiver in the 2027 recruiting class. He has been committed to the Texas Longhorns since November last year. But he made a trip to the Florida Gators, and he is loving it.

Royal arrived in Florida for an official visit on Thursday, June 11, and immediately let everyone know exactly how he was feeling.

"Florida's probably the only school that I know with five receiver coaches, and some people may think that's a bad thing, but I think that's a really good thing," Royal said per Gatorswire USA Today.

Royal is 5-11, 200 pounds out of Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. He ran a 10.26-second 100-meter dash. Royal is not just fast but also a receiver who happens to be elite on the track, too.

"The best thing about it, there's no egos," he told as reported by Gatorswire USA Today.  "So everybody just genuinely wants to see everybody be the best they can be."

June 11 was Royal's official visit to Gainesville after he attended Jon Sumrall's camp on 12th March, for spring visit.

The wide receiver racked up 53 catches. 1,151 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. That is why Florida, Ole Miss Rebels, Miami Hurricanes, among others have been chasing him all year, even though he is committed to Steve Sarkisian's program.

Royal also had things to say about Florida head coach Sumrall after a spring visit back in March. The energy inside the facility clearly left an impression.

"It's different," Royal told Rivals about Sumrall. "He's completely changed the energy. It was loud during practice. A lot of energy. You can hear Coach Sumrall anywhere in the building. He's hype, he wants to be there."

Florida and LSU are the two programs making the strongest push to flip him, according to Rivals reporter Sam Spiegelman. Royal cancelled planned official visits to Tennessee and Ole Miss. That narrowed the race down fast.

What Texas Must Do to Hold On to Royal at His Final Official Visit

Sarkisian must be in panic mode. After all, Royal is a strong recruit.

He is the top-ranked wide receiver in the 2027 class per Rivals, sitting at No. 6 overall. Royal is also the only five-star commitment Texas has in this cycle. If he flips, the Longhorns fall hard in the national rankings.

He is set to take an official visit to Texas from June 19 to 21. That will be the last official visit of his process.

Royal told Rivals reporter Chad Simmons earlier this year that Texas still felt right.

"I won't cut relationships off, and I will take visits, but Texas is the school that feels right for me," Royal said.

That was before the Florida visit.

Wide receiver coach Chris Jackson was the key reason Royal committed to Texas in the first place. Keeping that relationship strong heading into next week is everything for the Longhorns right now.
