“Madhouse”: Pete Golding Sends Strong Message to Lane Kiffin Ahead of Oxford Return
Pete Golding's advice to Lane Kiffin on his return to Oxford is simple: brace yourself. After his unexpected exit just before the Ole Miss Rebels' first-ever playoff appearance, the program has been anticipating a face-off against their former head coach.
“Going to be a madhouse, an absolute madhouse, and this whole place is ready … been ready,” Golding, Ole Miss head coach, told On3.
The Ole Miss Rebels are hosting Kiffin, the former head coach who left unceremoniously, and his new team, the LSU Fighting Tigers, on September 19 this season. This game has already become a widely anticipated one given Kiffin’s history.
The 50-year-old made headlines for his decision to leave a 12-1 playoff team in late 2025 to sign a seven-year contract worth $91 million with LSU. The shock didn’t end there, though.
He took around 21 coaches and staff members with him, and students came forth to say he was encouraging them to enter transfer portals.
Golding, who was brought to Ole Miss by Kiffin and chose to stay, stated that Kiffin created an environment of uncertainty at Oxford.
Despite the chaos, Ole Miss thrived. They defeated the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinals and reached the national semi-finals against the Miami Hurricanes, losing a close 31-27 game.
These victories are significant considering Kiffin had made claims that the team had asked him to coach them for the impending playoffs. Offensive lineman Bryson Sanders, tackle Paris Wilkins, and linebacker Suntarine Perkins refuted his claims publicly.
Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter did not mince his words when talking about Kiffin’s exit and the ensuing statements.
“If he wanted to go to LSU, that’s fine. Go to LSU, but leave us alone,” Carter told On3. “But because you don’t get what you wanted in being able to coach in the playoff, don’t try to burn us down on the way out and then continue...behind the scenes. That was the most frustrating part and the most disappointing part of the way it all ended.”
The LSU-Kiffin shocker didn’t just affect Ole Miss, its ripples were felt across the college landscape. Despite the criticism for hiring Kiffin the way they did, LSU has made a concerning statement.
LSU Hired Kiffin Before Anyone Could Have Done The Same
Congress is looking into the Protect College Sports Act, aimed to prohibit college coaches from engaging in job talks with other colleges while their season continues. This bill is commonly referred to as the “Lane Kiffin Rule.”
When LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry was asked about the rule, he defended the program, stating they did everything to ensure they landed him.
“I always tell people if we wouldn’t have hired Lane Kiffin, somebody else would’ve,” Ausberry said. “That’s the way the calendar works. It wasn’t an LSU thing. Unless they change the calendar, we’re going to always have this issue.”
LSU appears to hold no remorse over hiring Kiffin at the point they did. Ole Miss, on the flip side, seems to be simmering. Their face-off is set to draw out many people. Are you looking forward to it?
