Matt Campbell reveals what makes Penn State QB Rocco Becht so great
Rocco Becht followed his head coach across the country to a new program. And Matt Campbell made clear on Big Ten Network's B1G Today exactly why that relationship means so much to him.
"He's the winningest quarterback coming back in college football this year," Campbell said on B1G Today. "The piece that's made Rocco so great is he's earned the respect of his teammates every step of the way. He is the guy that you want fighting in your locker room and leading in your locker room."
That respect didn't come from one good season. Becht started 39 consecutive games at Iowa State, racked up 9,274 passing yards and 64 touchdowns across four seasons. He's the most experienced quarterback in college football heading into 2026, leading all FBS quarterbacks in games played, starts and career snaps at 2,509.
"When the quarterback and the head football coach are aligned at the same value system, you always give your team a chance to be successful," Campbell said in the same interview.

Becht told ESPN when he committed to Penn State that reuniting with Campbell, offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser, and QB coach Jake Waters was the biggest factor in his decision.
"To be in the same system over the past two years and to have that again, it's something pretty important to me," Becht said, per ESPN.
Penn State tight end Gabe Burkle, who played with Becht at Iowa State and followed him to Happy Valley, summed it up simply.
"He's a guy you want to play with. He's a guy you want to be your QB," Burkle said, per Nittany Sports Now.
Becht did all of this while dealing with a torn labrum last season that required surgery. He played through it, finished the year, and still put up 2,584 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Becht chose Penn State over 10 schools that wanted him as their top transfer target
When Becht entered the portal after the 2025 season, ten programs came calling and told him he was their top target. Six ACC schools, two Big 12 schools, one Big Ten school, and one SEC program all wanted him.
He picked Penn State. Not for money or the biggest offer, but to run it back with the same staff that developed him.
"Penn State is getting a winner, someone who is competitive and wants to win every game," Becht told ESPN. "Whatever my stats may be, all I want to do is win. Whatever I have to do for the team."
Penn State's team goals heading into 2026 include winning 10 games, reaching the Big Ten Championship and making the College Football Playoff. With Becht running the offense and Campbell building the program his way, those aren't unrealistic targets.
