Michigan faces immediate SEC threat for 5-star recruit 24 hours before commitment decision

Michigan Wolverines are fighting to land one of the best cornerback prospects in the country, and the clock is ticking. Five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson announces his commitment on Wednesday, July 1, and the race into the final hours is as tight as it gets.

Rivals reporter Ethan McDowell posted on X on Tuesday, June 30, that Michigan is in a "strong, tight" battle with an SEC school for Dobson heading into decision day.

According to the Rivals, the SEC team that is coming off as a threat in the last moment is the South Carolina Gamecocks.

"The relationships, opportunity for early playing time, and the connections the staff has built with Dobson and his family have pushed the Gamecocks to the front entering the final hours," Rivals insider Chad Simmons wrote. "Their NIL push is strong too."

That NIL piece is a big deal here. South Carolina reportedly has the biggest financial package on the table among all its finalists. For a prospect of Dobson's caliber, that kind of offer is hard to walk away from.

Dobson is ranked the No. 12 overall prospect and No. 3 cornerback in the 2027 cycle on the Rivals Industry Ranking. He's 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds out of Hough High School in Cornelius, North Carolina, and is also the No. 1 recruit in the state.

Michigan's case is built around Kyle Whittingham and the relationship his staff built with Dobson during his June 12 official visit to Ann Arbor.

His father, Rennard Dobson, told The Wolverine's Ethan McDowell before that trip that Michigan "definitely has a shot," adding that every school on the list was there for a reason.

Whittingham's staff still hasn't landed a five-star commitment in his tenure at Michigan. Dobson would be the first, per SI. That alone tells you how much this one matters to the program.

Texas A&M was the long-time leader heading into the final stretch, sitting at a 70.6% percent chance, according to Rivals.

Michigan is still in this. But South Carolina coming on strong late makes it hard to say which way this goes.

Dobson would be Michigan’s most important defensive commitment in this class

Michigan already has four-star corners Blake Jenkins and Darius Johnson locked in for the 2027 class, according to On3's 2027 Recruiting Rankings. Dobson is a step above both of them.

"Ran 10.78 in the 100m during his sophomore track season," read Rivals' scouting report. "Explosive and fluid athlete with tremendous change of direction. Very calm footwork and patience in coverage."

That is exactly the kind of athlete Jay Hill wants running Michigan's defense.

Getting Dobson does not just fill a spot on the roster. It tells the recruiting world that Whittingham's staff can go into SEC territory and walk out with a five-star. That has not happened yet under this staff.

Do you think Michigan can pull off the upset and land Dobson on Wednesday? Let us know in the comments.
