Michigan fans answer on how many losses are acceptable in 2026
Michigan Wolverines enter the 2026 season with renewed optimism under first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham. Expectations remain high, but fans also understand the Wolverines face one of the toughest schedules in college football.
That balance was reflected in the latest SB Nation Reacts survey, which asked Michigan supporters how many losses they would consider acceptable this season. Michigan fans have set a fairly clear benchmark for Whittingham's first season.
In the latest SB Nation Reacts poll, three losses was the most common response among Michigan fans. With 96 votes cast and two days left in the survey, two losses finished next, while only a handful of voters said four losses would be acceptable.
As per the recent poll by SB Nation, the response reflects the challenge awaiting the Wolverines. Michigan will face four teams that reached last season's College Football Playoff, including defending national champion Indiana.

On the other hand, road trips to Oregon and Ohio State rank among the toughest assignments in the Big Ten.
Michigan also hosts Oklahoma, Iowa, Penn State and Indiana before closing the regular season against Ohio State in Columbus. After finishing 9-4 last season, Whittingham inherits a talented roster but little room for error.
Quarterback Bryce Underwood is expected to play a major role in determining whether Michigan can exceed expectations. The former five-star recruit enters his second season looking to build on an inconsistent freshman campaign.
The fan poll suggests patience still exists. While supporters expect Michigan to compete, many recognize that navigating this schedule without a few setbacks will be a difficult task.
Michigan's own fans may be preparing for a difficult schedule, but national projections still expect the Wolverines to remain in the conference race.
Preseason projections still place Michigan among the Big Ten contenders
According to Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press, the Wolverines were picked to finish fifth in the Big Ten preseason media poll behind Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana and USC.
Michigan went 9-4 overall and 7-2 in conference play last season. With a difficult schedule, Bryce Underwood's play at quarterback will be a major factor in whether the Wolverines finish above those preseason projections.
Secondly, the Wolverines ended with their 2025 record under one of the easiest schedules. They had the unanimously declared five-star quarterback, Bryce Underwood, who was underwhelming in a relatively easy competition.
He managed just 2,428 passing yards. This season will not be forgiving. In 2026, they are set to face the second-toughest schedule, per sports commentator Phil Steele.
Whittingham begins his first season at Michigan with Big Ten Media Days and fall camp just around the corner. The next few weeks should offer an early look at where the Wolverines stand before the season opens.
