Michigan fans to lose their bragging rights after big ten school makes interesting decision

Michigan Stadium has long held the title of being college football's biggest stadium. However, Penn State expects Beaver Stadium to overtake the Ann Arbor venue in seating capacity until its renovation is complete, due to the installation of extra bleachers.

"We'll start the season off with the middle section bleachers and then I think by the USC game all of those upper bleachers will be in," Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft told Inside the Lions.

Beaver Stadium is currently undergoing a $700 million renovation. Construction began after the 2024 season and remains on schedule. Although the project is focused on modernizing the venue, it could also temporarily make it the nation's biggest college football stadium.

The additional upper-level bleachers are expected to be installed before Penn State hosts the USC game, as per Inside the Lions' June 25 report. And Kraft believes the seating numbers will continue to rise.

"We continue to count, but I think we'll be north of 108,000. I think we could get to 109,000, but what people don't understand is there are all these nooks and crannies that we're using now,” Kraft added.

Michigan Stadium currently has a capacity of 107,601. Beaver Stadium sits at 106,572 but is expected to climb beyond that mark once additional seating is installed.

Along with extra seating, the project includes a new scoreboard, upgraded sound system, field lighting and an expanded east concourse.

Before turning permanent, the temporary capacity boost could give Penn State a distinction Michigan has held for decades.

Penn State's projected milestone may only last one season

Of course, the possible record comes with an important catch. According to a report by Nittany Central, Beaver Stadium's expanded capacity may be dismantled after the renovations are completed.

Once the construction process is done, the temporary bleachers are expected to be replaced by premium seating, suites, and other modern amenities. That would likely reduce the stadium's long-term capacity.

Regardless, becoming the country's largest football stadium, even temporarily, would provide Penn State with another talking point as it continues investing in facilities and recruiting.

Michigan has previously lost the top spot before. In 1997, Tennessee's Neyland Stadium briefly became the nation's largest after an expansion.

When Beaver Stadium briefly moved ahead years ago, the Wolverines expanded Michigan Stadium and reclaimed the record.

If Kraft’s projections turn out to be correct, then the Nittany Lions could enjoy that distinction next season. Even if it's only temporary, it would mark a historic moment for them.
