Michigan Football Aggressively Targets Bryce Underwood's Home State For Major Boost

When it comes to the 2027 recruiting class, the Michigan Wolverines still have a long way to go to catch up. At the top are the Texas A&M Aggies, with 13 recruits. According to On3, Michigan holds only five commitments. To jumpstart the recruiting, they are prioritizing Bryce Underwood’s home state.

As reported by Angelique S. Chengelis of the Detroit News, Michigan is building stronger connections and gaining influence with local high school players in Detroit.

“If it was in a perfect world, you'd like to build the offensive line room from inside out, meaning trying to get the top offensive linemen from the state,” said offensive line coach Jim Harding.

In order to strengthen ties with coaches from Detroit Public Schools, Michigan’s two coordinators and assistant coaches attended a recent gathering hosted by the Horatio Williams Foundation in Detroit.

There, they met with local coaches before separating into position-specific groups for further discussion. Michigan has a reason for targeting Detroit.

The most prominent factor is quarterback Bryce Underwood, a native of the state. Coming out of Detroit, he threw for 2,428 yards and 11 touchdowns across 13 games, showcasing his presence and production as a passer.

The Wolverines’ new coaching staff under Whittingham is focusing on Detroit to expand and strengthen their footprint in the Midwest.

“I think people forget what a hotbed Detroit high school football is,” said quarterback coach Koy Detmer, a resident of Texas.

The Detroit Lions have consistently drafted (or signed) Michigan's talent.  For example, edge Derrick Moore and linebacker Jimmy Rolder in the 2026 NFL draft, pairing them with ex-Michigan player Aidan Hutchinson.

Michigan has secured two in-state commitments in the 2027 class so far.

Michigan Wolverines Strengthen Detroit Ties with Key OL Commitments

From the current 2027 Michigan roster, two players are from the state of Michigan. They are Muskegon offensive lineman Recarder Kitchen and Saline interior offensive lineman Louis Esposito.

“If it was in a perfect world, you'd like to build the offensive line room from inside out, meaning trying to get the top offensive linemen from the state,” said Harding.

Kitchen committed to Michigan last December. He brings a physical, high-motor presence in the trenches.

He came up with  50 tackles (19 for loss), 7.5 sacks, and 38 pressures as a freshman on varsity for a state championship team.

Esposito is another in-state anchor. Known for his balance and control in pass protection, he’s been a steady force up front.
