Michigan Football’s Big Ten Rival Gets $10M Gift; Turning Up Heat For Kyle Whittingham
Given the current scenario of college football, NIL plays a big role. Big Ten giant, the Michigan Wolverines, were the frontrunners in spending as they signed Bryce Underwood, spending approximately $10 million. This off-season, Michigan's Big Ten rival got a $10 million gift, putting Kyle Whittingham on the edge.
According to the sources, UCLA football announced on Wednesday, April 1, that the Bruins program received the eight-figure amount. Angelo Mazzone III, a UCLA alumnus who was the football manager for the Bruins in 1968, made the donation. The purpose behind the financial boost?
“To endow the UCLA head coach position and strengthen key areas that advance student-athlete success," read the purpose of Mazzone’s commitment as reported by UCLA Wire.
This gift is going to rev up the money talks in college football. This will be Bob Chesney's first season with the Bruins. And he might use the donation to attract more players and find a footing in the NIL game. But what makes Michigan be on its toes?
The last time they faced off was in September 2000 when UCLA sealed a 23-20 home victory over Michigan. Against the Bruins, the Wolverines hold an 8-3 record. If we take the recruiting trail, the 2026 class witnessed huge differences in rankings.
About a year ago, on June 26, 2025, Michigan also received a donation from Matthew and Nicole of the Lester Family. The donation was worth $6 million.
Before that, Michigan closed the recruiting class with 26 recruits, while UCLA limped at No.66 with 20 recruits. Right now, in the 2027 trail, Whittingham could only land six recruits while three players committed to the Bruins. With Chesney's UCLA catching up to the lay of the land that is NIL, it might leave Whittingham sweating.
After all, $10 million can certainly have a gigantic impact on the recruiting drives. Enough to write a rebound story after going 3-9 last season. With a reclassification of a 2028 recruit, both Michigan and UCLA are running the same race.
Michigan Wolverines and the UCLA Bruins are heavy suitors for a 2027 recruit
Even last month, Pole Moala was viewed as the top safety prospect for the 2028 class. According to 247 Sports' rankings, he was the No. 4 safety and No. 47 player overall in his class. But on March 23, he decided to move up a year and try his luck for the 2026 class.
"I feel I’m ready and it’s an opportunity that I didn’t think I could pass up," he said. "All the colleges that were recruiting me said they liked me even more if I came out early so I didn’t see any drawbacks to it."
According to the sources, Moala has already picked his top five programs that will get a chance to sign him. The final five are Michigan, UCLA, Oklahoma, Cal, and Ole Miss.
Going by On3's prediction, Chesney's UCLA has a better chance, 17% to bring home, while Michigan is at the end of the list with 12.1%. With a fresh $10 million gift, the Bruins are likely to strengthen their recruiting strategies.
