Michigan gains ground for elite 2027 CB previously predicted to commit to Ohio State
The Michigan Wolverines are vying to land yet another highly rated prospect, Monsanna Torbert, out of their arch-rival, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ hands. With his one trip to Ann Arbor, the Wolverines appear to have made a deep impression on the four-star cornerback.
“However, Michigan appears to be surging for the nation's No. 70 overall player, according to Rivals,” Wolverines Wire reported on June 21.
The Wolverines are on the move for a commitment despite the initial reports heavily leaning in the Buckeyes’ favor. Last week, the 2027 Cincinnati (Ohio) Princeton recruit visited Ohio State. That visit led to three predictions from Rivals that Torbert will commit to the program.
However, after his time at Michigan during the Victors Weekend, two experts have opined that Michigan has gained an upper hand. They are The Wolverine’s Ethan McDowell and Rivals recruiting insider Allen Trieu, as reported by the Wolverines Wire.
“Ohio State was the previous Rivals Prediction Machine leader, but this Victors Weekend has shifted things,” Trieu wrote. “Of course, Michigan was already making a move before that to get the visit, but now we see them as the clear leader.”
He also wrote that Torbert, who was an Indiana Hoosiers commitment previously, would be an asset to the Buckeyes. That applies to any program he chooses, really. According to 247 Sports Composite ratings, Torbert is a No. 13 cornerback and No. 127 player on the national level.
What does his scouting profile look like?
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback has been described as an “athletic two-way playmaker” who has “high-level instincts” that make Monsanna Torbert a good defensive back.
“Has good top end speed in the combine setting along with showing the ability to crack 11.0 seconds in the 100 meters on the track. Operates as a dual threat quarterback and safety for his high school team,” his scouting report from Rivals read.
In his junior year, he tallied 40 tackles and three interceptions (two pick-sixes). He also recorded 2,241 yards and 30 touchdowns on offense. The report believes that Torbert can make an impact on several spots in defense.
If Michigan does secure Torbert from Ohio, he will be a formidable force against the Ohio State Buckeyes, fueling games between the rivals even further. What do you think?
