Michigan lands major recruiting boost as 2027 class rankings shift
Rivals updated prospect rankings dropped Monday, and Michigan's 2027 class came out looking better than before.
Monsanna Torbert made the biggest move. The four-star cornerback from Princeton, Ohio, chose Michigan over Ohio State and is now sitting at No. 70 overall in the updated Rivals300. That makes him the top-rated commit in the class.
Torbert recorded 40 tackles, three interceptions, and three pass breakups in ten games last season. Beating out the Buckeyes for an in-state prospect at that ranking is one of the bigger recruiting wins of Whittingham's first cycle at Michigan.

Offensive lineman Louis Esposito also made a jump. He is now a four-star prospect for the first time in the updated Rivals300.
Michigan's top commits now sit here in the Rivals Industry Rankings: Torbert at No. 70, Xavier Muhammad, DL, at No. 88, Kamden Lopati, QB, at No. 115, Jakari Lipsey, OT, at No. 129 and Quentin Burrell, WR, at No. 144.
Michigan sits at No. 10 in the Rivals Industry Team Rankings and No. 7 on the 247Sports Composite. Twenty commits in. Class score of 90.880. That puts the Wolverines directly behind LSU, Texas Tech, Florida and Ohio State nationally.
LSU is just 0.03 points behind Michigan with five fewer commits. The gap is razor thin and will shift throughout the summer.
Twenty percent of Michigan's 2027 class comes from in-state, the highest of any program in the country right now. In the 2026 cycle, in-state prospects made up just four percent of the class.
Whittingham's staff has clearly made keeping Michigan talent home a priority, and it is showing in the numbers.
